If EA says your code has already been redeemed, the next step depends on where the code came from and which EA Account may have used it. A code bought new from a retailer usually goes back to that retailer. A secondhand code is often already spent, and EA says it cannot help with codes used on other players’ accounts. If you think you redeemed the code on the wrong EA Account of your own, EA Help can investigate, though it does not guarantee a particular result.
What the “already redeemed” message means
EA’s help article on redeeming product and promo codes, titled “Code has already been redeemed,” covers this error. It means the code has been applied to an EA Account at some point, so it cannot be applied again. It does not tell you which account used it, and it does not tell you whether the person who used it was the original buyer. Those two questions decide your next step.
Step 1: Find out which EA Account may have redeemed it
- List every EA Account you have used. Include old accounts, family accounts, and any account you may have signed into on a shared console or PC.
- Sign in to the account you expected to receive the game and check its game library. EA says a successfully redeemed game appears in the EA Account it was redeemed on.
- Check the other accounts on the same device or in the same household. If the game shows up on one of them, the code was redeemed there, and you are in the “wrong account” case described below.
- Write down the purchase date, the store, and the order or confirmation email. You will need these whichever path applies.
If the game is nowhere in your accounts, the code was most likely used by someone else. That points to one of the purchase-channel cases below.
Case 1: You bought a new code from a retailer
EA’s guidance for this situation is to return to the retailer where you bought the code. The retailer is the party that sold it, so it is the one that can provide a replacement code or a remedy under its own policy. EA does not describe a process for swapping retailer-issued codes itself.

- Explain that the code returned an “already redeemed” error on its first use, and ask for a new code or the store’s remedy.
- Be ready to show proof of purchase. Retailer policies vary, and this guide cannot confirm what any specific store will offer.
Case 2: You bought the code secondhand
When a code is resold, the original owner has most likely already redeemed it. EA says the original owner likely used the code and that it cannot help with codes used on other players’ accounts. Support cannot reset, transfer, or reissue a code that was spent on someone else’s account, so avoid spending time on a support request that asks for one.
Your practical options are to contact the seller about a refund or replacement, depending on the seller’s stated terms, or to check your payment provider’s dispute process if the sale was not what was advertised. Any refund or replacement depends on the seller, not on EA.

Case 3: You may have redeemed it on your own wrong EA Account
This is the one case where EA directly offers to look into the problem. EA’s help article says: “If you think you redeemed your code on the wrong account, contact us so we can look into it.” It adds: “We may ask you for proof of purchase, so make sure to have it ready.”
When you contact EA Help, include:
- The EA Account you want the game on, and the email address it uses.
- The other EA Account you believe redeemed the code, if you know it.
- The proof of purchase: receipt, order number, or confirmation email.
- The product name and the code, as shown on the packaging or email.
An EA community manager’s reply in an EA Forums thread roughly a year old gave the same direction for a case where a code had been redeemed on a different EA Account: contact EA Help for help finding that account and regaining access. That reply describes a route for investigation, not a promise that access will be restored. Outcomes depend on the account history and the purchase evidence.

Case 4: The code worked, but the content is missing
Sometimes a code is accepted and nothing new appears. Before assuming the code failed, check what it actually unlocks. EA notes that a code may be for DLC or a subscription rather than a full game. DLC or subscription content may only become accessible after you start the relevant game, and it may not create a new full-game entry in your library.
Also check whether the code has to be redeemed at a specified web address or on a specific platform. EA says some codes must be redeemed that way, and some older games cannot be redeemed in the EA app. Follow the instructions printed with the code or in the purchase email, because they vary by product and platform.

In a related EA Forums thread about a code that was redeemed but did not produce the game, an EA community manager’s reply pointed the buyer back to the retailer for a working code. That is the same channel as Case 1.

An expired code gets a different response from an already-redeemed one. EA says it cannot help with expired codes. Check the expiration date and any restrictions on the code’s packaging or email. If the code was already expired when you bought it, contact the retailer, because the sale is the seller’s responsibility.

Quick reference: which path applies
| Situation | Likely cause | Who handles it | What to keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bought new from a retailer | Code was redeemed before you used it, possibly by the seller or another buyer | Retailer, for a replacement or remedy | Receipt, confirmation email, seller messages |
| Bought secondhand | Original owner most likely redeemed it | Seller, under its own terms; EA says it cannot help | Listing, payment record, messages with seller |
| Game appears on another of your EA Accounts | Redeemed on the wrong account | EA Help, which may request proof of purchase | Proof of purchase, both account emails |
| Code accepted but no new game | Code was for DLC or subscription, or needs starting a game or a specific URL or platform | Follow the code’s own instructions; retailer if the code is wrong | Packaging, email, redemption instructions |
| Code is expired | Expiration date has passed | EA cannot help; retailer if expired at sale | Expiration terms, purchase record |
What is not guaranteed
EA’s current help article is the reference for the basic remedy and its limits. It does not promise that an already-redeemed code can be reset, transferred, or restored. Forum replies describe the usual direction for a case but do not commit EA to an outcome. Whether a purchase can be recovered depends on the purchase channel, the code type, which account owns the game, the region and platform, and the seller’s policy.
Keep your proof of purchase until the matter is resolved. It is the item EA says it may ask for, and it is the item a retailer will most likely need.
