Spoilers ahead: Sarah Morgan’s romance in Starfield unfolds in stages: build affinity with her, complete her personal mission In Memoriam, then choose whether to pursue a romantic relationship. A later Commitment quest can lead to marriage, but completing her mission alone does not make you a couple or marry you.
How Sarah’s relationship storyline progresses
The broad sequence is affinity, Sarah’s personal mission, a relationship decision, and—if you continue romantically—a separate commitment progression. Bethesda’s support pages describe the affinity system and In Memoriam; the romance and marriage steps are described in a secondary walkthrough.

What happens in In Memoriam?
The mission is about Sarah’s past as commander of the UC Dauntless, a ship lost during the Colony War. Its journal premise is to help her discover the fate of the crew. Bethesda’s mission support page reproduces the in-game journal entry describing that objective: Bethesda Support: In Memoriam.
The quest also includes a memorial and a ceremony sequence. Bethesda notes that if Sona does not speak to you at the Lodge, she will not speak until the ceremony is finished and you have visited the memorial. If you appear to be stuck waiting for her, check that both parts of the sequence are complete.

Do you have to romance Sarah to finish her story?
No. The relationship decision offers romance or friendship; pursuing romance is not required to complete Sarah’s personal mission. The available sources do not establish whether every romance dialogue branch can be reopened after choosing friendship, so do not rely on being able to reverse that choice later.

What is not confirmed about the romance?
- No published affinity threshold: Bethesda explains that approval changes with your actions and dialogue, but the cited pages do not give a numeric Sarah affinity requirement.
- No guaranteed wait time: the sources do not establish how long it takes for her mission or later dialogue to trigger.
- No automatic marriage from the mission: In Memoriam is a personal quest, while Commitment and marriage are described as subsequent relationship progression.
