PlayStation’s game description explicitly connects Black Myth: Wukong to Journey to the West and Chinese mythology. The novel, traditionally attributed to Wu Cheng’en and commonly described as one of Chinese literature’s Four Great Classical Novels, supplies the central Monkey King tradition behind the game.

PlayStation’s overview of the mythology describes the source novel as a 16th-century work blending Chinese legends with Buddhist and Daoist themes. Its story follows Sun Wukong’s supernatural rise, his conflict with the celestial order and imprisonment, and his eventual role in the pilgrimage of Xuanzang. The pilgrimage’s obstacles and the travelers’ weaknesses help shape the novel’s adventure.
How the game uses that source
Rather than casting the player simply as the novel’s Sun Wukong in a direct retelling, the game puts them in the role of the Destined One. PlayStation describes his westward journey as an effort to uncover truth obscured beneath a glorious legend. That framing leaves room to revisit familiar mythology while telling a distinct story.

The PlayStation Blog characterizes the game as an alternative interpretation and cautions against expecting a one-to-one adaptation. Its more specific comparisons between game material and the novel were based partly on pre-release trailers and speculation, so they should not be treated as confirmed explanations of the finished game’s plot. The available descriptions support calling it an inspired reworking, not a sequel or an adaptation of particular chapters.
Other influences Game Science has named
In a 2021 Unreal Engine interview, Game Science co-founder and CEO FengJi said the team had studied Journey to the West for a decade and that making another action RPG based on it felt natural. He also named other works that influenced the team’s creative interests:

A complete translation of Journey to the West is the most direct companion for exploring the source mythology. Translations and editions differ, so check the translator and whether an edition is complete when choosing one. The game draws on a much broader mythic and literary landscape, but the novel is its primary named source.
