If you wake up to the overnight message “An explosion was heard in the night…”, a meteorite may have landed on your farm. It appears only if the game’s placement check passes that night. If the check fails, the message still plays, but nothing lands and there is nothing to find the next morning.
What the explosion message means
The message “An explosion was heard in the night…” is tied to the meteorite event in Stardew Valley. It is easy to confuse with the Strange Capsule event, which uses a different message and sound, so it helps to read the message text carefully before you go looking for an object. The Stardew Valley Wiki, checked in 2026, lists the meteorite as the event behind this message.

How the game decides whether a meteorite lands
The message does not guarantee a meteorite. The event first has to be selected, which the Stardew Valley Wiki (checked 2026) gives as a 1% chance. If it is selected, the game checks a random 3×3 block of tiles on your farm.
- Placement fails if that 3×3 block contains any of the following: water, placed objects that block movement, buildings, or resource clumps.
- Placement succeeds when the block is clear. The meteorite then occupies the lower-left 2×2 part of that 3×3 block.
Because the block is chosen at random, two players with the same message can see different results. One may find a crater-sized rock in an open field, while another finds nothing because their farm was too crowded in the chosen spot.

What the landing does to your farm
Check the farm the next morning. Where the meteorite lands, it can destroy crops or paths. If your planted area or a walkway was in the 2×2 footprint, expect that damage. Plan your layout with this in mind if you are running a crop-heavy farm, since the landing site is random rather than chosen by you.
Mining the meteorite
The meteorite does not despawn on its own, so it stays until you deal with it. You need a Gold Pickaxe or better to mine it. The Stardew Valley Wiki (checked 2026) lists these drops:
- 10 Iridium Ore
- 8 Stone
- 2 Omni Geodes
- A 25% chance of a Prismatic Shard, which is a single-drop chance and not guaranteed
If you do not yet have a Gold Pickaxe, the meteorite will remain on the farm until you do.
Telling the meteorite apart from the Strange Capsule
The Strange Capsule is a separate night event with its own message, sound, and result. The table below compares the two.

If you got the message but no meteorite
This is the most common point of confusion, and it usually comes down to the placement check. Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the message was exactly “An explosion was heard in the night…” If it was “A strange sound was heard in the night…”, you are looking at the Strange Capsule event instead.
- Walk the farm the next morning, paying attention to crop beds and paths where debris or damage might show a landing.
- If nothing is visible, accept that the placement check likely failed. The game does not show you which tiles were checked, so you cannot confirm the exact reason.
Because the event is rare (1% chance per the Stardew Valley Wiki, checked 2026), an empty morning after an explosion message is not a sign of a bug in your save.

- Explosion message: the meteorite event was selected. Look for a meteorite on the farm.
- Strange-sound message: you are looking at the Strange Capsule event, not the meteorite.
- Meteorite on the farm: mine it with a Gold Pickaxe or better to receive the listed drops.
- Crops or paths damaged: the landing footprint is 2×2, so check the lower-left portion of the 3×3 area you were using.
