What Is Backcapping? Meaning Across Video Games

Backcapping means taking, contesting, or scoring an objective behind or away from the main fight. Here is how the term shifts across games, how it differs from C9 in Overwatch, and when the tactic backfires.

Backcapping means taking, contesting, or scoring an objective behind or away from the main fight, usually while the opposing team is focused somewhere else. The shared idea is consistent across games, but the objective, the location, and the mechanics change from one game to the next, so the exact meaning depends on the title you are playing.

The core idea

Most uses of the term share three features:

  • The objective is the point. Backcapping concerns capturing, contesting, or scoring something. Winning fights or racking up eliminations on their own are not backcapping.
  • The location is away from the main engagement. The objective sits behind the front line, far from the enemy’s main force, or somewhere the enemy has not set up to defend.
  • The timing exploits distraction. The move works because the other team is occupied elsewhere or cannot react in time.

Those three features are the common thread. Everything else depends on the game’s rules, which is why the term needs a game-specific reading.

How the term is used in specific games

The clearest way to see the variation is to look at how game-specific sources define the term. The examples below come from glossaries, slang guides, a forum discussion, a strategy article, and a developer post, so each reflects the wording of its own community or publisher.

Company of Heroes 2

A glossary for this real-time strategy game defines backcapping as capturing points behind the front line. Its example involves sending one squad toward an important central point while another squad captures the points behind it. Here the objective is a set of capture points, and the value comes from using a second squad to take ground the enemy has not defended.

MechWarrior: Living Legends

A slang guide for this mech game defines “Back Capping” as capturing enemy bases far from the front line in Terrain Control matches. The objective is a base rather than a point, and the distance from the front line is the defining feature.

Overwatch

In community discussion, players use backcapping for an enemy reaching an objective behind the opposing team’s setup. This is a community explanation rather than an official Blizzard definition. The thread that discusses it also separates backcapping from a different term, C9, covered in the next section.

Pokémon Unite

A terminology guide for this game defines a backcap as attempting a score when the enemy cannot react. Scoring is the objective here, and the timing window (the enemy is out of position) is what makes the attempt worth making.

Team Fortress 2

A strategy article describes backcapping as racing ahead to the next control point once teammates can finish capturing the current one. The move is about getting a head start on the next point, not about reaching a hidden or distant objective.

Minion Masters

In this card-based battle game, the developer described a bridge tactic in a February 27, 2023 developer blog post. In the tactic, an opponent captures the bridge, and the player waits until the opposing minion steps off, then immediately plays a unit behind it to recapture the bridge. The developer’s words were: “This change is specifically meant to address the “backcapping” strategy where when an opponent captures the bridge, you wait until his minion steps off the bridge, and then you immediately play something behind that unit to recapture the bridge.” The post said the rule changes would be tried in version 1.45. It documents that trial rather than establishing the current rules, so check the game’s current documentation before assuming the rule still applies.

Backcapping versus C9 in Overwatch

In the Overwatch forum discussion, backcapping is kept separate from C9. A participant described C9 as a team losing because it was not on the objective despite having a chance to be there. Backcapping, by contrast, was described as an enemy taking the objective behind the defending team. The participant wrote: “What you’re describing is backcapping, when a high-mobility or stealthy hero goes behind where the enemy is set up in order to capture the point.” (Blaze-14427, Overwatch forum participant, July 27, 2018.)

The distinction is useful, but it comes from one community discussion rather than an official glossary. Other players may use the terms more loosely, so confirm meaning with your own team when the word comes up in voice chat.

Backcapping is a trade-off, not an automatic win

A backcap works only if the timing and the team’s overall position support it. The Pokémon Unite terminology guide warns that an ill-timed attempt can cost the team. Leaving the main fight has an opportunity cost: the players who go behind the objective are not in the engagement, and if the attempt fails, the team may have lost both the fight and the objective.

Before attempting one, check three things in the game you are playing:

  • Is the objective actually unguarded, or is the enemy simply out of sight?
  • Can your team hold the main fight with fewer players for the time the attempt takes?
  • Does the game’s rule set reward the capture, recapture, or score in the way you expect?

Comparing backcapping across games

Four questions help compare any game’s version of the term: what counts as the objective (point, base, bridge, payload, or score), where it sits relative to the main engagement, whether the move is a capture, recapture, contest, or score, and what the team gives up by leaving the main fight. The table summarizes the cited examples on those points.

Game Objective Location relative to the fight Action Risk stated in the cited source
Company of Heroes 2 Capture points Behind the front line Capture Not stated
MechWarrior: Living Legends Enemy bases (Terrain Control matches) Far from the front line Capture Not stated
Overwatch (community usage) Objective behind the defenders Behind the opposing team’s setup Reaching or taking the objective Not stated
Pokémon Unite Score Wherever the enemy cannot react Score attempt An ill-timed attempt may cost the team
Team Fortress 2 Next control point Ahead of teammates Capture once teammates finish the current point Not stated
Minion Masters Bridge Behind an opposing minion that has stepped off Recapture Not stated; the developer described trial rule changes aimed at this tactic (2023, version 1.45)

The table is a comparison of how each source describes the term, not a measure of how often the tactic works. The cited sources do not provide success rates or win-rate effects for backcapping, so none are given here.

Origin of the term

The sources show how the term is used, but they do not establish when or in which game it first appeared. Treat the usage described above as current community and publisher vocabulary, not as a documented origin.

Because the meaning shifts by game, a reliable working definition is simple: backcapping is an objective move made behind or away from the main fight, and the game’s own rules determine what that objective is and what it costs to attempt.
