In Bedrock, the cited mechanics reference says a village ceases to exist when all beds are unlinked, including when they are destroyed. In Java, village detection also uses job sites and meeting points, so removing beds alone does not necessarily end every village mechanic. The cited sources do not support the claim that villagers die simply because their beds are gone.
What happens in each edition?
| Edition | Effect of destroying all beds | What villagers lose |
|---|---|---|
| Bedrock | A village is described as ceasing to exist when all beds are unlinked, including when they are destroyed. The reference says a village is created when at least one villager links to a bed. Minecraft Wiki | Villagers no longer have those beds as sleeping places. Microsoft documents villagers that own a bed in a village moving to it and sleeping. Microsoft Learn |
| Java | Village detection uses beds, job sites, and meeting points. The official update notes do not establish that removing all beds alone ends all village mechanics if other relevant points of interest remain. Minecraft: Village & Pillage | Villagers lose access to the beds they could otherwise find and use. The cited update notes say villagers try to find their own bed and workstation. Minecraft: Village & Pillage |
Why the village may not simply disappear
The buildings you see and the village state used by game mechanics are not the same thing. A settlement can remain visibly intact even when its relevant points of interest have changed. Village mechanics concern a logical area, with points of interest helping determine boundaries and center. Minecraft Wiki
That distinction matters most in Java: the official Village & Pillage notes name beds, job sites, and meeting points as village-detection inputs, not doors. They do not spell out every current edge case after the last bed is destroyed, so the safe conclusion is that Java village behavior depends on the remaining relevant points of interest and the applicable version—not that destroying beds always erases the village.
Do villagers die or leave without beds?
The sources describe beds as places villagers can find and sleep; they do not say that losing a bed kills a villager or makes it permanently leave. A bedless villager may lack the referenced opportunity to sleep in that bed, but claims that villagers die from exhaustion after their beds are destroyed are not supported by these sources.

How to restore beds or Bedrock village status
- Place a bed. If you want villagers to sleep, make the bed reachable. Microsoft’s documented behavior applies to a mob that owns a bed in a village; the listed entity type for that behavior is villager. Microsoft Learn
- Let a villager link to it. For Bedrock, the cited reference describes a village as existing when at least one villager links to a bed. Restoring a bed and allowing a villager to claim it is the practical way to re-establish that condition. Minecraft Wiki
- Check the edition-specific goal. Restoring a bed can provide a sleeping place, but the cited Java notes do not say that bed placement alone resets every village mechanic. They identify job sites and meeting points as additional inputs. Minecraft: Village & Pillage
Version note

Microsoft Learn The specific Bedrock statement about a village ceasing to exist when all beds are unlinked comes from a community-maintained reference; the cited Java material is an official update announcement, not a full account of every current edge case. Treat those distinctions in mind when interpreting behavior in a particular version or world.
