Romance progress develops through character-specific conversations, and pursuing another squadmate can disrupt an existing romance path. An imported Mass Effect romance is a separate case: it can remain part of Shepard’s story while a new ME2 relationship develops, with consequences that can carry into Mass Effect 3.
Can Shepard have more than one committed romance in Mass Effect 2?
Usually, no. Speaking warmly to several crew members does not automatically create several romances, and the general romance guidance for the game says squadmate two-timing is usually unavailable. Romance paths depend on conversations and character-specific progress; loyalty missions also form part of crew relationships. Starting another squadmate romance can interrupt the path already in progress.

That is a general pattern, not a guarantee that every flirtation or intimate encounter triggers the same lockout. Timing and non-Paramour liaisons can be exceptions, so distinguish an optional encounter from completing a squadmate’s committed romance arc. The Mass Effect Wiki romance reference provides broad mechanics context, but it is not an official, exhaustive outcome list.
What if Shepard imported a romance from Mass Effect 1?
An earlier relationship can remain in the story even while Shepard pursues a new ME2 romance. This is different from trying to complete two ME2 squadmate romances: the original partner is part of Shepard’s continuing history, and the later game can address the relationship and the choices made.

Liara’s case
EA community manager EA_Mako said that Liara may be upset if Shepard romances someone else in ME2, but Shepard can address the situation and make a choice in ME3. That is a specific answer about Liara, not a promise that every imported partner reacts identically or that every outcome is the same.
For the trilogy-wide context, Electronic Arts says choices carry from one game to the next and affect relationships on its Mass Effect Legendary Edition page. The page describes the collection as including the single-player base content and more than 40 DLC across Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3.

Does romancing Liara in the Lair of the Shadow Broker count for Paramour?
In the original release, EA_Mako said Liara’s Lair of the Shadow Broker romance did not award the Mass Effect 2 Paramour achievement because that romance option was available only to players with the DLC. Treat this as the reported behavior of the original release: the available information does not establish a complete achievement-by-achievement comparison across every later edition.

- If you want an ME2 squadmate romance: advance that character’s conversations and relationship rather than assuming multiple active commitments will remain available.
- If you want to preserve an imported relationship: remember that pursuing someone new can still be acknowledged in ME3; Liara’s story offers a chance to address the conflict and choose how to proceed.
- If you are pursuing Paramour: do not rely on Liara’s Lair of the Shadow Broker romance for the original ME2 achievement, based on EA_Mako’s account.
- If you are playing Legendary Edition: it includes Mass Effect 2 and its broader DLC collection, but the cited information does not provide a full edition-specific Paramour trophy matrix. Check the achievement or trophy listing for your platform and edition if that distinction matters.
