Its support guidance describes a temporary Nintendo eShop service outage as the likely cause, not a guaranteed diagnosis for every occurrence. Nintendo lists Switch 2, Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED as affected systems on its Americas support page.

What to do when the code appears
- Check Nintendo Network Status. Look for an eShop outage or scheduled maintenance on Nintendo Network Status. Nintendo notes that status updates may be delayed and maintenance lasting under five minutes may not be posted.
- If an outage or maintenance is listed, wait. Once Nintendo reports that service has recovered, reconnect to the eShop and try redeeming the code again.
- If service has recovered but the error remains, restart the console. Nintendo Japan recommends this step after maintenance or an outage has ended. Its guidance groups errors 2813-9258 and 9001-9258; this restart advice is specifically from the Japan support page.
- Contact Nintendo Support if the issue persists. Nintendo’s US and UK guidance recommends contacting support when no outage or maintenance is posted and the problem continues for an extended time. Use the support channel for your region.
If Nintendo Network Status shows no problem
A blank status page does not rule out a temporary service issue: Nintendo says updates may be delayed, and very short maintenance may not appear there. Check again after some time. If the error continues for an extended period without a posted outage, follow Nintendo’s regional support guidance rather than assuming the prepaid card or download code is defective.
