In an Indian Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF/PF) or payroll record, “NCP days” generally means Non-Contributory Period days: days in a wage period when no wages were paid and no PF contribution arose. It is a payroll and reporting term, not a universal acronym; its meaning depends on the document and context.
What NCP days mean in an EPF record
Employers report EPF information through the Electronic Challan cum Return (ECR). The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) lists “Submit ECR” as an employer service for monthly EPF filings. Its 2 August 2018 circular also uses the term “NCP Days” for days certified by an employer, confirming its use in official EPF material.
A non-contributory day is tied to wages and contributions, not simply to whether someone was physically at work. An absence by itself does not establish that a day should count as NCP. In particular, do not assume paid leave is non-contributory; check the wages paid and the employer’s leave and payroll records. The exact treatment of partial months and special payroll situations can depend on the employer’s documented practice.
Because “NCP” can mean different things in different settings, apply this interpretation only when the record is clearly about Indian EPF/PF or related payroll reporting. EPFO provides separate routes for employees, including passbook services, and employers, including ECR filing, on its official website.

How to check an NCP figure
If the number in your PF passbook or payroll record seems wrong, compare it with the records for that specific wage month. Then ask payroll to explain how it was reported.
- Identify the wage month. Check which month the NCP figure belongs to and the calendar dates covered.
- Compare wages and leave. Review your payslip and leave records to distinguish days with wages from unpaid days. Do not use attendance alone as the test.
- Check joining or exit dates. If you joined or left during the month, ask payroll which dates and documented convention it used in reporting.
- Ask how the count reached ECR. Request the days treated as paid, the wages considered, and the explanation for the NCP count entered in the employer’s filing.
- Request a review if records conflict. If payroll’s explanation does not match your payslip, passbook, or employment dates, ask the employer to check the underlying records.
These are checks to help locate a discrepancy, not a universal formula for every employer’s edge cases. EPFO’s 2018 circular establishes that employers have certified NCP days in official records; it is not a current, step-by-step calculation rule.

Can NCP days affect pension?
They may be relevant to pension calculations: an excerpt from the EPFO Pension Manual includes a pensionable-salary formula that accounts for NCP days. That fact alone does not determine an individual’s pension amount or entitlement. The result depends on the applicable rules and the member’s service and wage record. An NCP entry by itself does not establish that a claim will fail or that a particular pension amount has changed.
