In ONE PIECE ODYSSEY, GUTS reduces the damage a character takes from enemy Skill Attacks. It is a character stat, not a separate battle mode or ability. The game’s official starter guide distinguishes it from DEF, which reduces enemy damage more generally.
What GUTS does
Bandai Namco Europe’s ONE PIECE ODYSSEY Starter Guide defines GUTS (toughness) as “the value enemy Skill Attack damage is reduced by.” In practical terms, GUTS is relevant when a foe uses a skill attack; the guide does not give a per-point damage formula or a recommended target value.

How GUTS differs from DEF
The guide describes DEF (defense power) as “the value enemy damage is reduced by.” Its separate descriptions mean GUTS and DEF should not be treated as interchangeable labels: GUTS is specifically associated with enemy Skill Attack damage, while DEF is described more broadly. The guide does not quantify their relative effects or establish that one should always be prioritized over the other.
Ways to raise GUTS
Equip an item with a GUTS bonus
The starter guide shows a “GUTS +68 Ring” as an example of equipment with a GUTS bonus. This is an in-game item example, not a recommended threshold. Equipment can be found while exploring or after battles, then assigned from the Equipment submenu. The guide presents equipment in a square grid for each crew member.

Use a food effect
A PlayStation Blog article published December 12, 2022 says Sanji’s Bronze Bat Soup heals all allies and grants a 10% bonus to DEF and GUTS. That figure applies to the named food effect as described in the post; it is not a general damage-reduction rate for GUTS. The post also says Nico Robin can craft equipment to enhance its effects.

The official descriptions establish what kind of incoming damage GUTS is intended to reduce, but they do not provide its exact damage formula, a per-point conversion, or a universal target number. Treat GUTS as one defensive stat to consider when choosing equipment or food, rather than assuming a specific amount guarantees a particular result.

For combat context, Bandai Namco’s gameplay explanation describes battles that use enemy attributes and multiple battle areas, with equipment carrying different abilities and stats available across stages. Those details do not establish a fixed GUTS build or ranking against other stats.
