There is no confirmed answer naming a real-world, mythological, or artistic source for Galeem’s design. Galeem is an original antagonist in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s World of Light story, and the available creator commentary addresses the story’s opening—not what Galeem’s appearance was modeled on.
What is Galeem based on?
No source reviewed identifies Galeem as being based on a specific god, myth, religious symbol, painting, or other real-world subject. Nintendo’s official material on the Super Smash Bros. series and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate does not provide a design origin for Galeem. The accurate answer is that Galeem’s specific inspiration has not been publicly established in those materials.
That distinction matters: a visual resemblance can prompt a fan interpretation, but resemblance alone is not evidence of creator intent. Without a direct statement from Nintendo or the people who designed Galeem, claims naming a particular deity or artwork should be presented as speculation, not fact.
What has Sakurai said about Galeem’s role in the story?
Reports on a 2018 Famitsu column by Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai explain why the World of Light opening leaves Kirby as the survivor. Nintendo Insider quotes Sakurai as saying, “All the fighters perish at once in World of Light, but there wouldn’t be much of a story if one of them didn’t survive.” Nintendo Insider’s report attributes that wording to a translation of the column.

- New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers

- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
Nintendo Everything’s report says Sakurai’s reasoning was that Kirby’s Warp Star could carry him far enough to escape Galeem’s attack in a way that would read clearly on screen. Ordinary abilities, vehicles, or short-distance teleportation would not provide as convincing an escape. These comments explain the story setup and Kirby’s selection; they do not identify Galeem’s visual inspiration.
What the official materials do—and do not—establish
Nintendo’s Iwata Asks interview discusses the series’ origins and development, including the early prototype that Masahiro Sakurai and Satoru Iwata worked on. It predates Ultimate and does not discuss Galeem. Nintendo’s retrospective on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate provides game context and Sakurai commentary about reveal videos, but it likewise does not name a source for Galeem’s design.
Rank #2
So far, the public material cited here supports Galeem’s place in World of Light and explains how Kirby survives the opening attack. It does not settle whether Galeem’s appearance draws on any particular mythology, religion, or artwork.

If a theory compares Galeem with a real-world figure or visual motif, treat it as an interpretation unless it is backed by creator commentary. A useful theory should identify the specific features being compared and distinguish visual similarity from evidence of influence. The strongest confirmation would be a direct statement from Sakurai, Nintendo, or Galeem’s designers naming that source; no such statement appears in the materials cited here.
