You can build freely, survive by collecting resources, explore with friends, or try community-made worlds—there is no required objective. For a new player, the key choice is usually which edition fits the device and the people they want to play with: Java Edition is for Windows, macOS, and Linux, while Bedrock supports cross-play among compatible devices.
What is Minecraft?
Minecraft is a game about interacting with a world made of blocks. You can break blocks, collect them, craft items from materials, and place blocks to change the landscape or build structures. Its open-ended design supports very different styles of play: one person might construct a detailed city, while another explores, gathers supplies, or takes on hostile creatures. Minecraft’s official guide puts it simply: “Minecraft has no set goal and can be played however you’d like!” (Minecraft.net, June 5, 2023.)

What can you do in Minecraft?
Your choices depend on the mode and world you enter. In a solo world, you can set your own project or challenge; in multiplayer, you can build or play alongside other people. Community-created maps and other content offer experiences designed by players, rather than requiring you to invent every activity yourself.
What are the Minecraft game modes?
The official mode descriptions cover five modes. The first two are the most relevant for many new players; the others support custom challenges, designed worlds, or simply watching play.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Survival
Gather resources, craft tools and other items, and build while managing health and hunger. Hostile creatures can make exploration dangerous. Difficulty settings adjust the challenge.
Hardcore
Hardcore is a one-life variant of Survival, making mistakes consequential. It is intended for players who want a more demanding survival challenge.
Creative
Creative gives you abundant building resources and the freedom to fly, so you can concentrate on designing and constructing rather than gathering materials or managing ordinary survival pressures.

Adventure
Adventure mode is designed for creator-made experiences. A creator can restrict breaking and placing blocks to guide how players interact with a world.

Creative or Survival: which should you choose?
| Mode | What play emphasizes | Good fit if you want to… |
|---|---|---|
| Creative | Free construction with abundant resources and flight | Build without the usual resource-gathering and survival constraints |
| Survival | Gathering, crafting, exploration, health and hunger management, and danger from hostile creatures | Work toward goals while responding to the world’s challenges |
These modes change the feel of the same block-based sandbox: Creative removes much of the pressure around supplies and danger, while Survival makes those constraints part of play. Survival difficulty settings let you adjust the challenge.
What is the difference between Java and Bedrock?
Java and Bedrock are Minecraft editions, not separate basic concepts of the game. Their main practical differences are supported devices, multiplayer compatibility, and some features.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Edition | Supported platforms described by Minecraft | Multiplayer and notable features |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | Windows, macOS, and Linux | Supports Java multiplayer communities and community mods; Java players play with other Java players, not Bedrock players. |
| Bedrock Edition | Supported PC, console, and mobile platforms | Supports cross-play among compatible Bedrock platforms, controller and touch input, and the in-game Marketplace. |
On PC, Mojang’s official product is listed as Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC, which includes both editions. That PC bundle does not mean Java is available on every platform where Bedrock can be played.

Choose based on your device and friends
- If you play on a console or mobile device, check the platform’s current Minecraft listing; Bedrock is generally the relevant edition on supported devices.
- If you use a PC and want Java community mods or Java servers, Java Edition is the edition to consider.
- If you want to play with friends on console or mobile, check that everyone is using a compatible Bedrock platform and edition.
Edition features are not identical on every device. Confirm compatibility on the official Java-versus-Bedrock comparison and the relevant store page before buying.
Which platforms support Minecraft?
Minecraft’s official overview lists platform families including PC, Mac and Linux, Chromebook, iOS, Android, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, and Amazon Fire. That list does not guarantee every edition or feature is available on every device in every region. Check the current official overview and your device’s store for the version offered and its requirements: Minecraft platform and game overview.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you play Minecraft alone or with other people?
Yes. Minecraft supports single-player and multiplayer. Multiplayer options described by Minecraft include local play, player-hosted servers, public servers, and Realms, an online service. Which option works for you—and whether online play requires a separate platform subscription—depends on the device, service, and region. Check the current platform and service terms before relying on a particular setup or cost.

Is Minecraft appropriate for children?
Minecraft’s Parents’ Guide gives the game a recommended PEGI rating of 7 and an ESRB rating of Everyone 10+. The guide describes combat as mild violence with no blood. Multiplayer introduces different considerations: players may encounter player-versus-player combat or griefing, in which another player damages or disrupts their creations. Ratings and experiences can vary by region and by the world or server a child joins.
Review account and device controls
Minecraft’s parental-controls guidance points parents to Microsoft/Xbox account settings for managing multiplayer, communication, and purchasing access. Multiplayer is off by default on child accounts, according to the Parents’ Guide. Settings and labels can differ across accounts and platforms, so review the current guidance for the child’s account and device:
Minecraft says parental controls are not provided for versions earlier than 1.16.4 or for modded versions. Keeping the game updated helps ensure access to current safety features; account settings alone may not describe every platform’s controls.
Does Minecraft cost extra for Marketplace content or online play?
The base game and optional services or content are distinct. Bedrock’s in-game Marketplace offers community-created items such as maps, skins, and texture packs. Realms and other online services can add features or costs, and console online multiplayer may require a platform subscription. Prices and terms vary and can change; check the local official store and the service’s current terms before purchasing. The official PC listing identifies the Java & Bedrock PC product, but does not establish a current price for every region or platform.

Quick Recap
How should a beginner start?
- Check where you will play. Find Minecraft in the official store for your PC, console, or mobile device and confirm which edition is offered.
- Match the edition to your friends. For multiplayer, confirm that everyone can join using compatible editions and platforms.
- Pick a mode for your first world. Start in Creative if you want to learn building without resource and survival demands; choose Survival if gathering and danger are part of the appeal.
- Set expectations for play. Minecraft does not prescribe a finish line. Choose a first project—such as a shelter, a farm, or a larger build—or explore until you find a goal worth pursuing.
- If a child will play online, review controls first. Check multiplayer, communication, and purchase settings for the account and device, then consider which servers or worlds are appropriate.
