It is not a separate damage type: it uses the type of the attack it enhances. A rogue’s sneak attack with a dagger, for example, adds precision damage that counts as piercing damage.
How precision damage works
When an ability grants precision damage, add that amount to the damage from the attack it modifies, using the attack’s damage type. The Player Core damage rules illustrate this with a dagger Strike enhanced by sneak attack: the extra precision damage is part of the dagger’s piercing damage, rather than a separate pool with its own damage type.
This distinction matters when defenses apply. A creature immune to precision damage ignores the precision contribution, but still takes the dagger’s ordinary damage. By contrast, resistance to the attack’s damage type applies to the combined damage, including the precision portion.
How defenses apply
Apply damage defenses in this order: immunities first, weaknesses second, and resistances third. Resistance reduces applicable damage, but not below zero. For a dagger Strike with sneak attack, precision immunity removes the sneak attack addition; physical resistance can then reduce the remaining applicable piercing damage, including any precision damage that is not negated by immunity.

Examples of abilities that grant precision damage
Rogue sneak attack
Sneak attack adds precision damage to a qualifying attack. With a dagger, that added amount is piercing damage for purposes of defenses. The general immunity and resistance interaction is illustrated by the dagger example in Player Core.
Ranger Precision Hunter’s Edge
Precision Hunter’s Edge adds precision damage the first time in a round the ranger hits their hunted prey. The amount scales with level. Its Masterful Hunter upgrade can add precision damage to later hits. The trigger, prey restriction, and number of qualifying hits are specific to this ability; precision damage does not have one universal trigger or amount. See the Hunter’s Edge rules.

Rogue feat Analyze Weakness
Analyze Weakness requires the rogue to identify a creature using Recall Knowledge. The next time that turn the rogue deals sneak attack damage to the chosen creature with a Strike, the feat adds precision damage. Its condition and timing come from the feat’s own text: Analyze Weakness.

- Identify the attack or effect the ability modifies and the damage type that attack uses.
- Check the ability’s trigger, target restrictions, and limit on qualifying hits; these vary by ability.
- Separate precision immunity from resistance to a damage type. Immunity suppresses the precision addition, while matching resistance reduces applicable damage of the attack’s type.
- Resolve defenses in the rules order: immunity, weakness, then resistance.
The general rule is in Player Core, Chapter 8, “Damage,” especially pages 407–408. Ability-specific details can differ, so use the current text of the particular feat or class feature when resolving its trigger or scaling.
