It changes how stick input translates into crosshair movement; it is not a universal “best” setting, and it is separate from Aim Assist Ease In.
What Linear Ramp changes
Blizzard described Linear Ramp as an Aim Technique in the controller’s Advanced controls. Its patch notes state: “This technique, along with disabled aim smoothing, will cause your crosshair to rotate proportionally with the angle that the stick is deflected.” In practical terms, the crosshair response tracks stick deflection proportionally rather than following a differently shaped response curve.
The qualification matters: Blizzard’s description ties that proportional behavior to aim smoothing being disabled. The notes date from 2017, so they establish the setting’s documented behavior and menu location at that time, not that every current platform client presents identical menus.
How it compares with Dual-Zone and Exponential Ramp
Linear Ramp, Dual-Zone, and Exponential Ramp are alternative controller Aim Techniques. The cited Blizzard documentation defines Linear Ramp but does not provide a controlled comparison proving that it is more accurate or performs better than the other techniques.

When deciding what feels comfortable, pay attention to how each option responds to small stick movements and partial deflection, how predictable fine corrections feel, and whether you prefer a direct-feeling response or a curve that changes sensitivity across stick travel. Sensitivity and aim smoothing can also affect how the controls feel together.
There is no established universally superior choice in these sources. A community discussion from December 2023 describes settings as subjective and recommends understanding the options rather than copying another player’s values. Treat player reports that Linear Ramp feels direct or responsive, but requires fine stick control, as personal experience—not a guaranteed result.

Linear Ramp is not Aim Assist Ease In
These settings affect different parts of aiming. Linear Ramp is the controller Aim Technique: it describes the relationship between stick deflection and crosshair rotation. Aim Assist Ease In controls how aim-assist strength builds as the reticle approaches a target.
In a September 12, 2018 explanation, Blizzard said: “At a setting of 0, there is no ease in, and full strength is given immediately while a setting of 1 gives a linear ramp to full strength.” Blizzard also said its default Ease In value of 0.5 creates a curved ramp it found worked best with the widest range of heroes. That statement concerns the aim-assist parameter, not a recommendation to use Linear Ramp as the Aim Technique. Read Blizzard’s console aim-assist explanation for that distinction.

Where to find it and how to try it
Blizzard’s April 2017 patch notes documented the setting under Controls > Controller > Advanced, alongside Dual-Zone and Exponential Ramp. Because that path comes from historical patch notes, check the current controls menu for your platform if the labels or layout differ.
- Open the controller controls and locate the Advanced options.
- Select Linear Ramp as the Aim Technique.
- If you want to assess the proportional response Blizzard described, disable aim smoothing as well.
- Test the result in-game, changing one setting at a time so you can tell which change affects how aiming feels.
You do not need a special controller for this software setting; a compatible controller is the relevant requirement. The sources do not show that buying or upgrading hardware improves aim.
