The right focus depends on what you want your mage to do.
Which school should you choose?

This is a role-based recommendation, not an official ranking. Bethesda’s manual describes the schools and their effects, but does not declare one the strongest. It notes that “Your use of magic is based on your skill level in the six schools of magic.” (Bethesda Softworks, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion PC Manual.)
What each school brings to a mage
Destruction: direct offense
Choose Destruction if you want your spellcasting itself to hurt enemies. The manual describes effects that damage health and equipment, making it the clearest default for a conventional offensive mage. That does not establish it as the best choice for every build or situation.
Conjuration: allies and bound equipment
Conjuration changes how you approach a fight rather than simply adding direct damage. Summoned creatures can fight enemies, and bound items provide temporary equipment. It suits a mage who wants another combatant or a magical weapon in the mix.

Restoration: recovery and protection
Restoration covers more than healing. Its documented effects include restoring and fortifying, curing disease, and protecting against harmful influences. It is a practical support school if staying alive and recovering from setbacks matter more to you than maximizing direct offense.
Alteration and Illusion: utility and control
Alteration manipulates physical properties, while Illusion affects perception and minds. Consider these schools when you want magic to shape situations beyond straightforward attacks. The specific effects you want should guide the choice; there is no evidence-based universal ranking for their value.
Mysticism: another utility option
Mysticism is also one of the six schools listed in the official manual. Its presence is a reminder that magic is not limited to damage, summoning, and healing; choose it for the utility effects you want rather than treating every school as a contender for the same combat job.
How to decide what to focus on
- For a simple offensive mage: begin with Destruction, then add support or utility according to what your character lacks.
- For a mage who wants help during fights: consider Conjuration for summons or bound equipment.
- For a safer, more self-sufficient character: invest in Restoration alongside an offensive school.
- For control or environmental flexibility: choose Illusion or Alteration based on the effects you want to use.
- For custom spellcasting: plan to develop the relevant school skill as well as pursuing access to spellmaking.
You can combine schools; the choice is about emphasis, not an exclusive class selection. The useful question is whether you want magic to deal damage, add a combat ally, keep you standing, or solve problems through control and utility.

Spellmaking and skill investment
Spellmaking can make a mage more flexible over time. The original official manual says access to the spellmaking and enchanting altars at the Arcane University comes with the appropriate Mages Guild rank. Remastered-focused guides describe completing all six recommendation quests as the route to the university’s Spellmaking Altar, and report that custom spell costs decrease as the relevant school skill rises. In practical terms, if custom spells are part of your plan, focus on the school whose effects you expect to use. Its skill level matters to the cost of custom spells, according to the Remastered guide; spellmaking access is a separate progression goal.

The available evidence does not establish a school that deals the most damage in every build, levels fastest in every scenario, or performs best at every difficulty. Bethesda’s Oblivion Remastered product page identifies the game and purchase routes, but does not rank its magic schools. Treat “best” as a question of role: Destruction for direct offense, Conjuration for summons and bound gear, and Restoration for dependable support.
