A new save starts with a coop, two chickens and 15 Hay, while the map’s distinctive Blue Grass helps animals gain friendship faster and uses less feed than ordinary grass.
What do you start with on Meadowlands Farm?
Choose Meadowlands when creating a new save. Its built-in animal setup gives you a coop and two chickens from the start. Instead of the 15 Parsnip Seeds provided on other farm maps, Mayor Lewis gives you 15 Hay. Stardew Valley’s official 1.6 changelog describes the map this way: “It has a chewy blue grass that animals love. You also start with a coop and 2 chickens.”

What does Blue Grass do?
Blue Grass grows naturally on Meadowlands and benefits animals that eat it. According to the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Blue Grass entry, animals gain 16 friendship points from eating Blue Grass, compared with 8 from ordinary grass. They also consume half as many tufts: coop animals eat one tuft instead of two, and barn animals eat two instead of four. A successful scythe cut yields two Hay.
Blue Grass is not exclusive to Meadowlands. The same wiki entry says you can buy the Blue Grass Starter recipe in Qi’s Walnut Room for 40 Qi Gems, then use the resulting in-game item to place Blue Grass on another farm type. The grass was added in update 1.6; in 1.6.9, its spread rate was adjusted to match normal grass.

What is the Meadowlands layout like?
The Stardew Valley Wiki’s farm overview describes Meadowlands as a varied map with a river and two small lakes. Its immediate coop, chickens and naturally growing Blue Grass make raising animals its clearest advantage. The layout encourages animal raising, but it does not prevent you from growing crops or pursuing other activities.
Is Meadowlands Farm good for animals?
It is a particularly convenient choice if you want to raise animals early: the coop and chickens are already there, and Blue Grass improves feeding and friendship gains. That is a head start, not a requirement. You can keep animals on other maps, and Blue Grass can be introduced elsewhere through its in-game recipe.

How does Meadowlands compare with other Stardew Valley farms?
Choose based on the terrain and activities you want to emphasize. The map descriptions in the Stardew Valley Wiki’s farm overview present these broad orientations:
| Farm map | Broad emphasis |
|---|---|
| Meadowlands | Animal raising, with a starting coop, two chickens and Blue Grass |
| Standard | Open space for crops and animals |
| Forest | Foraging |
| Hill-top | Mining |
| Riverland | Fishing |
| Wilderness | Combat |
| Four Corners | Group-friendly layout |
| Beach | Spacious terrain with fishing and foraging opportunities; less suited to sprinkler-dependent crops |
These are play-style descriptions, not restrictions: a farm’s orientation does not lock you out of other ways to play.
