A star rarity mark alone does not prove that a card is holo.
What “rare holo” means
The phrase combines two separate features: the card’s rarity category and its foil treatment. Pokémon’s older HeartGold & SoulSilver checklist marks rare Holo cards “★H” and ordinary rare cards “★,” making the distinction explicit. The exact symbols and categories depend on the set and era.
Pokémon’s 2023 Scarlet & Violet announcement says the solid black circle, diamond, and star continue to represent common, uncommon, and rare, respectively, across many card types. Newer sets also use additional rarity categories, so a shiny card is not necessarily a rare holo.
Holo rare and reverse holo are different finishes
In common collector usage, a regular holo has foil in the Pokémon’s artwork area. A reverse holo typically has foil over the card outside that area. The foil pattern and placement can vary by set, so appearance alone may not identify the exact version. CGC explains the distinction in its guide to Pokémon rarity symbols and card features.

How to identify a rare holo card
- Find the set and collector number. These are usually printed near a corner. Use the checklist for that specific set to confirm the card’s rarity and printing. Pokémon’s Sword & Shield checklist, for example, separates holo rare and other categories.
- Check the foil area. Tilt the card under light. Foil in the artwork area is characteristic of a regular holo; foil outside the artwork area is characteristic of a reverse holo.
- Account for era and language. Foil patterns and rarity conventions have changed over time. The same Pokémon can appear on cards with different set numbers, rarities, and finishes.
- Compare the exact card, not just its name. For two versions, compare set, collector number, rarity mark, foil pattern, language, edition, and condition.
How Scarlet & Violet changed the convention
Historically, English booster packs could contain a non-holo rare, while holo rares were not guaranteed. Bulbapedia’s rarity reference describes a change with Scarlet & Violet: rare cards included in booster packs from that point are holofoil rares. This describes booster-pack conventions, not every product or variant; check the specific card and product rather than treating it as a universal rule.
Scarlet & Violet also introduced or used additional rarity labels, including double rare, ultra rare, illustration rare, special illustration rare, and hyper rare. Its parallel foil cards can have a foil pattern around the artwork. Therefore, shine by itself cannot tell you whether a card is a holo rare or another foil rarity; use the set’s checklist and the card’s number.

Does “rare holo” mean the card is valuable?
No. The label does not establish a price. CGC notes that rarity symbols alone cannot determine value; age, condition, playability, and whether a set is special can also matter. Identify the exact card, language, edition, and condition, then look for recent comparable sales of that same version. A grading service may be relevant for an individual card, but grading is not a substitute for identifying the printing or checking its market evidence.
No universal pull-rate figure applies to every rare holo: odds depend on the specific set and product, and a reliable figure should be tied to both.
