There is no established universal average for gamers. For a simple visual click test, a useful rough reference is about 200–250 milliseconds, but that is a practical benchmark—not a representative scientific norm. Human Benchmark lists 200–240 ms for “regular gamers,” compared with its approximate 250–300 ms range for the general population; its page does not document a standardized sample behind those categories. A click-test score also does not measure everything involved in reacting during a game.
What the published numbers mean
Human Benchmark’s “Average Reaction Time: What’s Normal?” page gives these approximate ranges:
| Category on Human Benchmark | Listed range | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| General visual reaction time | 250–300 ms | An approximate site benchmark, not a universal scientific norm. |
| Regular gamers | 200–240 ms | The site’s benchmark; no standardized sampling details are provided for this category. |
| Pro esports players | 140–180 ms | The site’s estimate, not a representative measured norm for professional players. |
These figures are useful as rough context, not as proof that every gamer reacts faster than every non-gamer. The figures are from Human Benchmark’s page, which does not state a publication year. See its reaction-time test and explanation.
Why a click test is not the same as reacting in a game
A simple visual test measures a narrow response
A basic test records the time between a visual cue appearing and a click or button press. That elapsed time reflects both the person’s sensory and motor response and the particular device and test implementation. It is not a pure measurement of the brain in isolation.

Games add decisions and movement
In a match, a player may need to notice an event, recognize what it means, choose an action, aim or move accurately, and anticipate what is likely to happen next. A laboratory task, a one-cue click test, and an in-game action therefore produce different kinds of response-time results.
A 2020 Worcester Polytechnic Institute study involving more than 150 users found that self-rated gamer ability had small effects on response performance in its tasks, while decision complexity and dexterity demands had substantial effects. Its findings underline why a single click-test number cannot stand in for game performance. Read the WPI study.

What studies of gamers can—and cannot—show
League of Legends players and attention tasks
A 2022 study compared expert and regular League of Legends players with non-players using an Antisaccade Task. The player groups had faster responses on that task. Because it was not a standard simple click test, and because a cross-sectional comparison cannot establish cause and effect, it does not prove that gaming itself makes people faster or establish a universal gamer average. Read the Frontiers in Human Neuroscience study.
Age and response times in StarCraft II
A 2014 analysis of records from 3,305 StarCraft II players aged 16–44 found that age-related slowing in within-game, self-initiated response times began at 24 in that dataset. The authors did not find evidence that expertise attenuated that decline. This is a result about a particular in-game measure and population, not proof that gamers’ overall reaction time peaks at 24. How equipment affects a reaction-time score
Display and device characteristics can affect measured performance, so they matter when comparing online scores or competitive aiming results. They should not be confused with a change in a person’s underlying processing speed.
In 2019, NVIDIA Research compared 60, 120, and 240 Hz displays in a competitive moving-target aiming experiment and found performance improved as refresh rate increased in that task. The study supports a hardware effect on specific aiming performance; it does not establish that a higher-refresh display makes a person inherently faster on a simple reaction test. How to check your own reaction time fairly
- Use the same reaction-time test and the same device each time. Changing the test, mouse, screen, or setup makes scores harder to compare.
- Take several rounds rather than relying on one unusually fast result. Human Benchmark recommends averaging 5–10 rounds.
- Compare your results with your own earlier scores under similar conditions. Treat a simple click score as a measure of that test, not a verdict on your gaming ability.
Human Benchmark notes that equipment and daily condition can influence results. Consistency is more informative than comparing one browser score with a laboratory task or an in-game statistic.
