For Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl, the best choice is a Pokémon that can use Ghost- or Dark-type attacks and take Fantina’s coverage moves. There is no single species that is best for every team. Check which game you’re playing before choosing a specific counter: Fantina’s encounter and team details differ across versions.
What works against Fantina in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl?
Fantina specializes in Ghost-type Pokémon, and Nintendo identifies Mismagius as the head of her team in these remakes. Ghost- and Dark-type attacks are useful options against her team, but a type advantage alone does not guarantee a safe matchup: her Pokémon can carry coverage moves that threaten the Pokémon you bring. Nintendo’s overview of Gym Leaders in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl and this remake-specific Fantina battle guide support that approach.
How to choose your Pokémon
Compare your available options by three practical criteria:
- Useful attacks: Can it use Ghost- or Dark-type moves?
- Staying power: Can it withstand the coverage moves Fantina’s team may use?
- Availability: Can you obtain and train it before this battle in your version?
The Pokémon Company International’s battle guide recommends taking advantage of type matchups. Use that as a starting point, then weigh the opponent’s moves and your Pokémon’s ability to endure them rather than choosing by type alone.

Why the game version matters
Fantina’s progression differs between Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl and Pokémon Platinum; the remakes also have their own encounter details. A recommendation tied to one game may therefore not fit another. The available Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum Gym Leader guide illustrates why the version should be specified. For the remakes, use the team and move information in a Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl-specific guide rather than assuming every game uses the same roster.

Bring a Pokémon with a Ghost- or Dark-type attack that can also handle Fantina’s coverage, choosing from what is available in your game. If you want a species-specific recommendation, first confirm your version and the Pokémon you can access; a universal best pick is not established across all five games.
