For a FireRed story run, pair Flamethrower and Dragon Claw with Fly or Wing Attack, then use the last slot for Slash or team-specific coverage.

For a general Pokémon FireRed story run, a strong default moveset is Flamethrower, Fly, Dragon Claw, and a flexible fourth move. Use Slash as a natural, no-TM option while leveling, or choose coverage or utility that helps your team. If you do not need Fly for travel, use Wing Attack instead.

Recommended Charizard moveset

Slot Recommended move How Charizard gets it Role
1 Flamethrower Learns it at level 34 Reliable Fire-type STAB attack
2 Fly or Wing Attack Fly: HM02 compatibility; Wing Attack: learns it at level 36 Flying-type STAB; Fly also provides travel utility
3 Dragon Claw TM02 compatibility Special coverage
4 Slash or a team-specific move Slash: learns it at level 44; other options depend on compatible TMs or tutors Flexible slot for a natural attack, coverage, or utility

Move levels and compatibility are from the FireRed/LeafGreen-specific Charizard learnset and move data.

Why Dragon Claw works in FireRed

Pokémon FireRed uses Generation III’s type-based damage categories: a move’s type determines whether it uses Attack or Special Attack. Fire and Dragon moves are special, while Flying and Normal moves are physical. As a result, Flamethrower and Dragon Claw use Charizard’s Special Attack; Fly, Wing Attack, and Slash use its Attack. This differs from later games, where damage categories are assigned move by move. See the Generation III damage-category explanation and FireRed/LeafGreen move data.

Charizard is Fire/Flying, so Flamethrower and either Flying move receive same-type attack bonus (STAB). Dragon Claw is not STAB, but it offers special coverage. Its animation or modern classification should not mislead you: in Generation III, Dragon-type attacks are special.

Choose Fly or Wing Attack

Use Fly if you want travel utility

Fly handles travel and deals Flying-type damage in battle, but it occupies a move slot and takes two turns to attack. It is a practical choice if you want Charizard to carry HM02.

Use Wing Attack for a battle-only slot

Wing Attack is learned naturally at level 36 and gives Charizard a Flying-type STAB move without dedicating the slot to Fly’s travel function. Choose it if another Pokémon handles travel or you prefer not to use Fly in battle.

What to put in the fourth slot

Slash: the straightforward natural option

Charizard learns Slash at level 44, so it does not require a TM. It is a convenient neutral option, but Normal moves are physical in Generation III and do not draw on Charizard’s Special Attack.

Coverage or utility: match your party

Charizard has additional compatible TM and tutor moves, but compatibility alone does not make a move the best choice. Use the slot to address a weakness in your other five Pokémon, and consider whether a one-use TM would be more valuable on a teammate. Check your current move list and TM inventory before committing a resource.

  • Bring the Pokemon you capture in Fire Red to the worlds of Leaf Green, Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, or Pokemon Colosseum for more challenge

Moves that are usually lower priorities

  • Dragon Rage: learned at level 54 and deals a fixed 40 HP damage according to the FireRed/LeafGreen learnset. Its usefulness depends on whether fixed damage is still appropriate for your progress.
  • Fire Spin: learned at level 64; its listed base power is low and its accuracy is 70%, making it less appealing than Flamethrower for straightforward damage.

These levels and move values come from FireRed/LeafGreen-specific move data.

Use FireRed-specific move data

Move availability and battle mechanics vary across Pokémon games. FireRed is a Generation III title, and its move categories follow the type-based system; the FireRed/LeafGreen overview places the games alongside the Ruby/Sapphire-era features. Do not assume that a later-generation Charizard set or move classification applies unchanged.
