Best late pre-Hardmode armor by class
The Official Terraria Wiki’s armor progression guide separates its recommendations by class and notes that players optimizing offense or defense may benefit from mixing pieces instead of using a complete matching set. These are late pre-Hardmode options, not requirements for a new character; the guide distinguishes choices available after defeating at least one pre-Hardmode boss. Which set should each class use?
Melee: Molten armor
Molten armor is the late pre-Hardmode pick when you want defense alongside melee bonuses. The progression guide lists 25 defense, 17% melee damage, 7% critical strike chance, and immunity to On Fire! for the set. Those listed benefits make it the clearest all-around melee recommendation in the guide.
Ranged: Necro armor
Necro armor is the guide’s choice for maximizing ranged bonuses. It lists 19 defense, 15% ranged damage, and 10% critical strike chance. Compared with Molten armor, it is more directly focused on ranged offense rather than the highest listed defense.

Magic: choose for your weapon and mana needs
Magic has several credible options rather than one universal winner. A Wizard Hat, Mystic Robe, and Meteor Leggings combination focuses on magic damage and critical chance. Jungle armor is a more balanced choice for magic offense, mana economy, and defense. Meteor armor suits a loadout built around the Space Gun or Gray Zapinator because of its damage bonuses and no-mana-cost interaction with those weapons.
Summoning: Obsidian for whips, Bee for minions
Choose Obsidian armor if your summoner playstyle leans on whips: its emphasis is whip speed and related utility. Bee armor is the better fit if you want summon damage and additional minion capacity. The choice is about which part of the summoner loadout you want to strengthen.

When to use a mixed set instead
A full matching set grants a set bonus, so replacing a piece can mean giving up that benefit. But matching pieces are not automatically optimal: the progression guide notes that players focused on offense or defense can improve their setup with mixed armor pieces. The armor overview describes 36 pre-Hardmode armor sets and says pieces may be crafted, bought from NPCs, or dropped by enemies. See Official Terraria Wiki: Armor.
As a practical rule, use a complete set when its bonus supports your build; consider mixing pieces when a particular defensive or offensive stat matters more. The guide also says a tier-appropriate matching set is typically enough to beat the game, so optimizing every piece is optional rather than a progression requirement.
