For a general Pokémon Emerald playthrough, use Blaze Kick, Brick Break, Earthquake, and Bulk Up. Swap Bulk Up for Aerial Ace if you would rather have immediate Flying-type coverage than spend a turn setting up. This is a practical story-mode set, not a universal competitive recommendation.
Recommended Blaziken moveset
| Move | Role | How Blaziken gets it in Emerald |
|---|---|---|
| Blaze Kick | Fire STAB | Learns it at level 36; Generation III move data lists 85 power and 90% accuracy. |
| Brick Break | Fighting STAB | TM31; 75 power and 100% accuracy in Generation III. |
| Earthquake | Ground coverage | TM26; 100 power and 100% accuracy. |
| Bulk Up | Setup | TM08 or learned at level 28; raises Attack and Defense. |
The set combines both of Blaziken’s STAB types with Ground coverage. In Emerald, move category depends on type: Fire attacks are special, while Fighting attacks and Earthquake are physical. Blaziken’s base Attack is 120 and its base Special Attack is 110, so neither STAB category should be ignored. Pokémon Database’s Blaziken data lists its base stats, and its Generation III move data provides the move details.
Choose between setup and extra coverage
Bulk Up for a setup option
Bulk Up raises Attack and Defense, strengthening physical attacks such as Brick Break and Earthquake while helping Blaziken withstand physical hits. It uses a turn without dealing damage, so it is most useful when you can safely set up rather than when you need immediate coverage.
Aerial Ace for immediate Flying coverage
Aerial Ace is a 60-power move that never misses. It provides direct Flying-type coverage instead of a stat boost; choose it if you value reliable damage on that turn more than Bulk Up’s setup potential. It is TM40.

How to handle the Fighting slot
Brick Break is the practical earlier option: it is available as TM31 and has 100% accuracy. Sky Uppercut is a later level-up alternative, learned at level 59; it has 85 power and 90% accuracy. It may suit a late-game set, but its level requirement makes it a poor answer for much of the story.
Choose a Fire move that fits your progress
Blaze Kick arrives by level-up at level 36 and provides Fire STAB. Flamethrower is another option, with 95 power and 100% accuracy in Generation III. It is TM35, but the move data also lists access through Blaziken’s pre-evolution level-up moves, so the TM is not the only route. Use the Fire attack you can obtain and prefer as you progress.

Why Emerald-specific mechanics matter
Emerald uses Generation III’s type-based physical/special categories, not the later system that assigns categories to individual moves. Thus, even though Blaziken’s Attack (120) is slightly higher than its Special Attack (110), Fire moves still use Special Attack and Fighting moves use Attack. Its base stats also include 80 HP, 70 Defense, 70 Special Defense, and 80 Speed. Fire/Fighting gives Blaziken varied offensive options, but its weaknesses to Water, Ground, Flying, and Psychic, alongside its modest defenses, make selective switching sensible.
Simple progression through the story
- Before Blaze Kick: Keep your best available Fire attack and Fighting attack; add coverage when a useful TM becomes available.
- At level 36: Blaze Kick becomes an available level-up Fire STAB option.
- As TMs become available: Consider Brick Break and Earthquake for reliable Fighting STAB and strong Ground coverage; use Bulk Up or Aerial Ace in the remaining slot according to your preference.
- At level 59: Consider replacing Brick Break with Sky Uppercut if you want the late-game level-up alternative and accept its lower accuracy.
Story mode versus competitive play
This recommendation is for an ordinary Emerald playthrough. It should not be treated as an Emerald competitive build: the surfaced Smogon material concerns Ruby and Sapphire, and the available page content does not substantiate an Emerald-specific competitive set.
