In the United States, the ESRB rates the game T for Teen. Those two answers come from different places and answer different questions, so it helps to know which is which before deciding whether the game suits a younger child.
The publisher’s minimum age: 13
Hello Games Ltd’s End User Licence Agreement (EULA) states: “You must be at least 13 years old to play the Game.” It adds that a player who is 13 or older but still below the age of majority in their jurisdiction must obtain agreement and acceptance of the EULA from a person with parental authority. The EULA also says it may change from time to time, so check the current version rather than relying on an older copy or a forum summary.

The EULA is a contract, not a content rating. It tells you who the publisher expects to be agreeing to the terms. It does not tell you whether the content is suitable for a particular child.
The US rating: T for Teen
The Entertainment Software Rating Board assigns No Man’s Sky the rating T for Teen, with three content descriptors: Animated Blood, Fantasy Violence, and Users Interact. The ESRB describes the game as a space-exploration title with combat in both space and on the ground.

- Embark on an epic voyage, find your own destiny in this epic space adventure
- Includes 6 years of updates
- An entire universe to explore on the go in the palm of your hands
- For the first time ever, PlayStation 5 physical edition as well as Nintendo Switch (physical & digital)
The descriptors mean the following in practice:
- Fantasy Violence: ship-to-ship combat against enemy ships and pirates, and ground combat with gun-like weapons and melee attacks against creatures, human-like figures, and robots. The summary also mentions laser fire and large explosions.
- Animated Blood: some parasitic creatures emit green blood when shot.
- Users Interact: the game includes features that let players interact with each other online. The ESRB’s general guidance says these interactive notices flag online and purchase features and do not affect the age category.
The ESRB summary does not describe realistic human violence. That is useful context, but a parent should still weigh the combat and explosions against a child’s sensitivity, not just the label.
Online play, messaging, and voice chat
The EULA says that, where available, the game may include multiplayer, messaging, voice chat, and other community features. Steam lists the game with online interactivity. On the US PlayStation Store listing, online play is optional and requires PlayStation Plus. Feature availability and platform requirements can change, so confirm them on the listing for your own device.

Whether a child can reach other players depends on the device and the account, not on the game’s age rating alone. If you want to limit contact with strangers, decide that in the platform’s own settings rather than assuming the rating handles it.
Using parental controls
The ESRB notes that console and PC parental controls can block games by rating, limit play time, manage purchases, and restrict internet access. For this game, the controls most relevant to a younger player are:

- Turning off or limiting online access, if you want to keep the game single-player.
- Restricting communication features, including voice chat and messaging, on the child’s account.
- Setting a daily play-time limit.
Menu names differ between PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and Windows, so look for the family or child account section in your platform’s settings rather than following a fixed path.
Outside the United States
The ESRB rating applies to the US. It is not an international age limit, and this article does not confirm a current PEGI or other non-US category for No Man’s Sky. If you live outside the US, check the rating shown on your local storefront or console store page before buying.
