The 16-character alphanumeric code is supplied with a particular card or product, and the code type determines what it redeems: eShop balance, a game or add-on, or Nintendo Switch Online membership. Use the code you received, and check that its market is compatible with your Nintendo Account region.
What the 16-character code is for
Nintendo describes eligible eShop codes as 16-character alphanumeric codes. That format applies to redeemable eShop products; it is not one shared number that unlocks the store, nor does it necessarily describe every Nintendo registration or error code. Nintendo Support gives the format on its Switch 2 support page for Malaysia, and Nintendo Japan likewise describes download numbers as 16 alphanumeric characters.

Which kind of Nintendo eShop code do you have?
Look at the card, product, or purchase confirmation to identify what the code is intended to redeem. The three common categories have different outcomes:
| Code type | What it redeems | Where the value goes |
|---|---|---|
| Prepaid balance card | Adds funds to Nintendo eShop balance | The Nintendo Account used to redeem it |
| Download card or download code | Specific software or add-on content | The Nintendo Account used to redeem it |
| Nintendo Switch Online membership code | Membership time | The Nintendo Account used to redeem it |
Nintendo’s Malaysia support instructions and Japanese support guidance distinguish balance, download, and membership codes. A code for one category is not interchangeable with another.

Where to enter the code
- On Nintendo Switch or Switch 2: open Nintendo eShop, choose the account that should receive the redemption, and select Enter Code from the code-entry screen.
- On Nintendo Store: use its code redemption option where that service supports the code type and market.
- For a download code: check the product shown on screen before confirming. Once redeemed, the download belongs to the account that redeemed it.
Nintendo documents eShop redemption and supported Nintendo Store redemption on its code support page.

- Confirm the code type. Make sure it is an eShop balance, download, or membership code intended for the service you are using.
- Read the characters again. Nintendo Japan says the letters O, I, and Z are not used in these codes, so check for a mistaken reading of a similar-looking character.
- Check whether it has already been redeemed. A download may already have begun on the account that entered the code.
- Verify the market and account region. For example, Nintendo Japan warns that Japan-market codes may require a Nintendo Account set to Japan. That is a specific Japan-market rule, not proof of a universal rule for every country.
- Check the product’s printed terms. Validity periods and other conditions can vary by product and market.
For region requirements, consult the local Nintendo support guidance for the code you have. Nintendo’s Japan-market instructions also state that a redeemed download is tied to the redeeming account and cannot be transferred to another account. They say Japanese download numbers are generally valid until 150 days after purchase unless the package or card gives a different deadline; do not apply that Japan-specific period to codes sold elsewhere.
