There is no single best Pokémon for Cynthia’s entire initial Champion battle in Pokémon Platinum. For the most important one-on-one matchup, bring a Pokémon that can use a strong Ice-type attack against Garchomp—but make sure it can survive long enough to use it or can move first. You will also need distinct answers for Milotic, Lucario, Roserade, Togekiss, and Spiritomb.
What is Cynthia’s team in Platinum?
This is Cynthia’s first Champion battle, not her post-National Dex rematch. Serebii lists her initial team as Spiritomb Lv. 58, Roserade Lv. 58, Milotic Lv. 58, Togekiss Lv. 60, Lucario Lv. 60, and Garchomp Lv. 62. Serebii’s Platinum Elite Four and Champion roster lists the team and levels; the rematch uses the same species at substantially higher levels.

Her team has no single shared weakness to build around. Plan to keep several kinds of coverage available rather than relying on one Pokémon to sweep the battle.
What is the best counter for Cynthia’s Garchomp?
A Pokémon with a strong Ice-type move is the clearest specialist answer: Garchomp is Dragon/Ground and takes four-times damage from Ice. But that weakness does not guarantee a knockout or even a safe attack. At Lv. 62, Garchomp is fast and hits hard, and its Dragon Rush, Earthquake, Flamethrower, and Giga Impact give it ways to punish a poor matchup. It also holds a Sitrus Berry and has Sand Veil, according to the Bulbapedia Platinum walkthrough.

Choose the Ice attacker by its ability to get the move off, not just by its type. A faster Pokémon may strike first; a sturdier one may survive a hit and retaliate. If neither is true, switching safely or using a turn when Garchomp must recharge after Giga Impact can create an opening. Don’t assume a slow, fragile Ice Pokémon is the best counter simply because of the type matchup.
How to answer each Pokémon on Cynthia’s team
| Opponent | Useful approach | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Spiritomb Lv. 58 | Use strong neutral damage. | In Generation IV, Ghost/Dark Spiritomb has no direct weaknesses. Don’t spend a turn trying to exploit a later-generation Fairy weakness. |
| Roserade Lv. 58 | Pressure it with Fire- or Flying-type attacks. | It can use Toxic and strong special attacks, so avoid letting it linger. |
| Milotic Lv. 58 | Use Electric pressure; a physical Electric move can avoid Mirror Coat’s reflection of special damage. | Its Surf, Ice Beam, Mirror Coat, and Dragon Pulse punish careless choices. Ice Beam is especially dangerous to Grass-type answers. |
| Togekiss Lv. 60 | An Electric attack is a recommended answer. | It is Normal/Flying in Platinum—not Fairy-type—and its Air Slash, Aura Sphere, Water Pulse, and Shock Wave mean a one-hit knockout is not assured. |
| Lucario Lv. 60 | Use Fire, Ground, or Fighting attacks. | Its Aura Sphere, ExtremeSpeed, Shadow Ball, and Stone Edge can punish frail or poorly matched switch-ins. |
| Garchomp Lv. 62 | Use a strong Ice attack, with a plan to outspeed it or survive its response. | Dragon Rush, Earthquake, Flamethrower, and Giga Impact cover several matchups; its Sitrus Berry can also help it stay in the fight. |
The move details and matchup recommendations in this table come from the Bulbapedia Platinum walkthrough. The key is to match the move to the opponent: for example, use physical pressure on Milotic if you are concerned about Mirror Coat, rather than treating any Electric-type Pokémon as an automatic answer.

How to build a practical battle plan
- Reserve an Ice move for Garchomp. Choose a user that can act before it or withstand its attack; a four-times weakness alone does not settle the matchup.
- Keep physical damage available for Milotic. Mirror Coat reflects special damage, while Ice Beam threatens many Grass-type Pokémon that might otherwise seem suitable against Water.
- Bring targeted coverage for Roserade and Lucario. Fire or Flying attacks pressure Roserade; Fire, Ground, or Fighting attacks can pressure Lucario. Avoid sending a fragile counter into their coverage moves without considering the risk.
- Use a strong neutral attacker against Spiritomb. It has no direct weakness in Generation IV, so don’t build the plan around a type advantage that is not there.
- Check your own team’s levels, moves, and availability. A theoretically ideal counter does not help if it is undertrained, lacks the needed move, or cannot safely enter the matchup. Build around the Pokémon you can actually bring.
Why there is no universal best Pokémon
The best choice depends on what role you mean. For Garchomp, an Ice attacker is the standout specialist. For the full battle, a useful roster needs separate tools: Ice coverage, a way to handle Milotic’s Mirror Coat, and appropriate pressure for Roserade and Lucario. Spiritomb has no weakness to exploit, while Togekiss calls for another matchup-specific answer.
That means the most reliable recommendation is a coverage plan, not one species name. Judge each candidate by whether it can deliver the right attack, whether it can take or avoid the opponent’s response, and whether it contributes against more than one member without leaving another matchup uncovered.
