For the simplest official way to play a classic mainline Pokémon adventure today, buy Pokémon FireRed Version or Pokémon LeafGreen Version for Nintendo Switch or Switch 2. They are standalone digital releases, require no Nintendo Switch Online membership, and support local wireless trading and battles—but not online play. For other generations, you will need compatible older hardware and the matching game, so choose based on the specific title and whether you want to transfer Pokémon forward.
Which route fits what you want to play?
| Priority | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| The easiest current official access to a classic mainline adventure | FireRed or LeafGreen on Switch or Switch 2 | Standalone digital purchase; local wireless multiplayer; no online play. Nintendo says Pokémon can be transferred to Pokémon HOME. Nintendo’s FAQ has current release details. |
| Playing a different generation as originally released | Compatible original Nintendo hardware and the matching cartridge | Which console you need depends on the game. Check cartridge condition and save behavior before buying; current used-market prices are not established here. |
| Moving Pokémon into later games or HOME | Check the supported transfer chain for the exact game before choosing a platform | Some 3DS Virtual Console games can use Poké Transporter, and transfers from Bank to HOME require HOME Premium. See the transfer section below. |
| Trying Pokémon games in Nintendo’s retro subscription libraries | Switch or Switch 2 with the required Nintendo Switch Online tier | The libraries include some Pokémon titles, but they do not provide the classic mainline handheld catalog. The Game Boy Advance library requires the Expansion Pack tier. |
What old Pokémon games can you play on Switch now?
FireRed and LeafGreen are the straightforward mainline choices
Nintendo offers Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version as standalone digital Switch releases. They are not physical cartridge reissues, and buying or playing them does not require Nintendo Switch Online. The releases work on Switch and Switch 2, and Nintendo says Pokémon can be transferred from either one to Pokémon HOME. Check Nintendo’s current FAQ and regional eShop listings for availability and language options; Nintendo’s Americas listings include separate English, European French, and European Spanish versions.

Trading and battling are supported over local wireless, not online. Nintendo says these games are not planned for the Game Boy Advance Nintendo Classics collection. Its FAQ says, “We have nothing to announce regarding any other potential titles.” That statement is not an announcement that other games will or will not arrive later.
Nintendo Classics is not the classic mainline Pokémon library
Nintendo Switch Online’s retro apps include some Pokémon games, but most are spin-offs rather than the old mainline handheld adventures people usually mean. Nintendo lists Pokémon Trading Card Game in the Game Boy library, and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team, Pokémon Puzzle League, Pokémon Snap, Pokémon Stadium, and Pokémon Stadium 2 among titles in its Switch Online + Expansion Pack libraries. The official pages reviewed do not list the original Red/Blue, Gold/Silver/Crystal, Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, or DS-era mainline games in those catalogs.

When should you choose older hardware instead?
If you want a generation other than FireRed or LeafGreen, or you want to play with its original hardware and controls, the route is the compatible Nintendo system plus that game’s cartridge. There is no single console that covers every old Pokémon release, so identify the exact game first and confirm which hardware plays it.
- Check that the console is compatible with the specific cartridge, not just that it belongs to the same broad era.
- For used copies, inspect condition and ask about save reliability. Older cartridges may have battery-related save behavior; the available sources do not establish the condition of any individual copy.
- If transferring Pokémon matters, verify the full path from that game before buying. A playable game is not necessarily a game with a currently usable transfer route.
How do Pokémon transfers work?
3DS Virtual Console games, Poké Transporter, and Bank
Nintendo lists 3DS Virtual Console versions of Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, and Crystal as compatible with Poké Transporter. Transporter moves eligible Pokémon into Pokémon Bank. Nintendo lists Bank compatibility with Pokémon X, Y, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, Ultra Moon, and Pokémon HOME. Consult Nintendo’s compatibility information for the supported connections.
Pokémon Support says transferring from Bank to HOME requires the Pokémon HOME Premium Plan. If you no longer have a 3DS, Support says it may still be possible to move Pokémon from Bank by linking the Nintendo Network ID used with Bank to the Nintendo Account used with HOME; without a 3DS, the transfer moves all Pokémon in Bank at once. Check Pokémon Support’s Bank-to-HOME instructions for requirements.

FireRed and LeafGreen on Switch and HOME
Nintendo says Pokémon can be transferred from the Switch releases of FireRed and LeafGreen to Pokémon HOME. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to use HOME, and its Basic Plan supports moving and trading Pokémon among compatible games; Premium adds other features. The Bank-to-HOME Premium requirement is a separate rule for that legacy transfer route. See Pokémon Support and Pokémon HOME information for current details.

Make the choice before you buy
- Name the game or generation. If FireRed or LeafGreen suits you, the Switch release is the least complicated official route. If you have another game in mind, find its compatible hardware and cartridge.
- Decide whether original hardware matters. Switch access is convenient for these two releases; older consoles and cartridges are the route for other classic generations or their original presentation.
- Check multiplayer needs. Switch FireRed and LeafGreen allow local wireless play but not online play.
- Map transfers first if you want to keep Pokémon moving forward. Check whether the specific game connects to Transporter, Bank, or HOME, and account for Bank-to-HOME’s Premium requirement.
- Confirm current availability and language. Digital catalogs, service compatibility, and regional listings can change; verify the eShop or Nintendo and Pokémon support pages for your region before purchase.
