Mine around Y=15–16 in the Nether. The Minecraft Wiki’s main ancient-debris reference identifies Y=16 as the level with the highest average amount, while its mining tutorials commonly recommend Y=15. Treat the two as a practical target range, not a guaranteed exact optimum.
Why Y=15–16 is the practical target
Ancient debris generates in the Nether and is not naturally exposed to air, so you generally find it by mining through surrounding blocks rather than spotting it on an open surface. The Minecraft Wiki describes debris as able to replace netherrack, basalt, and blackstone. Minecraft Wiki: Ancient Debris
The Wiki’s main page says Y=16 has the highest average amount. Its tutorials commonly point to Y=15, and one gives Y=8–22 as a higher-concentration range. Since these recommendations differ by only one level, setting a tunnel around Y=15 or Y=16 is a sensible approach; the available evidence does not establish a guaranteed single best coordinate. How generation differs by edition
The Minecraft Wiki describes different generation attempts for Java and Bedrock. These are world-generation attempts across ranges, not a promise that every chunk or tunnel will contain ancient debris.

- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes

| Edition | Generation attempts described by the Minecraft Wiki | What that means for mining |
|---|---|---|
| Java | One triangularly distributed cluster attempt from Y=8 to 24, plus another evenly distributed attempt from Y=8 to 119. | Y=15–16 is a practical concentration target, but debris can also generate at higher and lower levels within the broader ranges. |
| Bedrock | Two cluster attempts from Y=8 to 23, plus three additional attempts from Y=8 to 119. | The target range remains useful, but generation is not limited to those two levels. |
Minecraft Wiki: Ancient Debris generation details
Set up a mining tunnel around the target level
- Enter the Nether and check your coordinates. Use the Y coordinate to locate the tunnel height; the target is Y=15 or Y=16.
- Dig a main tunnel at that height. Use branch mining if following the Minecraft Wiki tutorial, extending side passages to expose more blocks.
- Search the exposed blocks and continue through the surrounding material. Ancient debris is not naturally exposed to air, so an open cavern is not a reliable way to spot it.
- Keep the broader range in mind. The generation ranges extend well beyond Y=15–16, so finding nothing at the target height does not mean debris cannot occur elsewhere.
This is practical gameplay guidance, not a measured guarantee of yield. The cited sources do not provide a reliable blocks-per-hour figure or establish a universal efficiency ranking for mining methods.

Mojang’s Java Edition Snapshot 21w37a notes that the world-height update changed ore distribution and says there is no single best height for all ores. Its official 1.18 release article gives broader context and an ore-distribution chart, but neither source specifies an exact ancient-debris peak. The debris-specific levels and attempt ranges above are attributed to the community-maintained Minecraft Wiki. Mojang: Java Edition Snapshot 21w37a Mojang: Caves & Cliffs: Part II now available
