No single Lycanroc form is the best evolution for every player. Midday Lycanroc has the highest Speed, Midnight Lycanroc has the most HP and defensive stats, and Dusk Lycanroc pairs high Attack with high Speed. All three share the same base-stat total of 487, so the real choice comes down to stat spread, ability, and which evolution route your Rockruff can take.
How Rockruff chooses its form
Rockruff evolves at level 25, and the form it becomes depends on its ability and the in-game time. Pokémon Database’s evolution and generation summary lists two routes:
- Ordinary Rockruff evolves into Midday Lycanroc during the daytime and Midnight Lycanroc at night.
- Rockruff with Own Tempo evolves into Dusk Lycanroc at dusk.
Dusk is not open to every Rockruff. It requires the Own Tempo ability, and earlier games distributed Own Tempo Rockruff as a special or event Pokémon, so check whether yours has that ability before planning around dusk.
Dusk timing depends on the game
The exact dusk window changes between generations. Pokémon Database gives 5–6 p.m. for Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon and 7–8 p.m. from Generation VIII onward. Those are the only clock ranges covered in this guide. For Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, check a version-specific guide or watch the in-game clock before leveling, rather than assuming a fixed hour.

Check the ability and timing before leveling
Serebii states that a Lycanroc’s form is set at the moment of evolution and cannot be switched afterward. A mistake therefore cannot be fixed on the same Pokémon. Use this order:
- Open the Rockruff’s summary screen and confirm its ability. Own Tempo is required for Dusk Lycanroc; Keen Eye, Vital Spirit, or Sand Rush lead to the day/night forms.
- Confirm the in-game time and the dusk window for your game version.
- Level the Rockruff to 25 during the window that matches the form you want.
- If the form is wrong, you cannot change it. You would need to raise a different Rockruff.

All three Lycanroc forms are Rock type and have the same listed base-stat total of 487. The table shows the stats and abilities that separate them, using Pokémon Database’s listings.

What this comparison does not settle
These figures rank stat distributions, not performance in any particular battle format. Competitive viability depends on the format’s rules, the team around the Pokémon, and the opponents it faces, and this guide does not rank the forms for any specific format. Likewise, the stat values are base figures, so the final stats of a given Pokémon will differ with its level, Nature, and training.
