Which one gives you more frames depends on your hardware, your Minecraft version, and the scene you play in, so the reliable answer is a side-by-side test on your own computer.
Why no client wins on every computer
Frame rate comes from the interaction of your processor, graphics card, memory, graphics settings, render distance, and the world or server you load. A client that runs smoothly on one machine can land close to another on a different machine. Lunar’s own guidance says Sodium and OptiFine may perform differently depending on the computer, and it recommends trying both rather than relying on a general ranking. That advice applies to any client comparison.
Sodium, Lunar Client and Badlion Client compared
The three options are not the same kind of product. Sodium is a mod that replaces parts of Minecraft’s rendering. Lunar and Badlion are downloadable clients that bundle their own feature sets. The table below compares them on the axes that matter for frame rate decisions.

Sodium: the performance-focused mod
Sodium is the option to choose if you want the most direct route to better rendering performance and already run a compatible setup. The project describes itself in one sentence that is useful to quote: “A high-performance rendering engine replacement for Minecraft, which greatly improves frame rates and reduces micro-stutter.” That is the project’s own claim, not an independent measurement. Because Sodium is a mod, it is only as current as the Minecraft version and loader you run it on, so check compatibility before you spend time on a setup.

Lunar Client: convenience with Sodium included
Lunar Client is the simplest path for players who want Sodium-based rendering without assembling a modded installation by hand. Its documentation describes Sodium through its Fabric add-on, along with a Turbo Entities feature for Minecraft 1.17 and later. If you play on an older version, confirm that these features exist for that version before you assume the same performance profile.
Badlion Client: read vendor benchmarks carefully
Badlion publishes FPS comparisons that describe their test method: the same computer and settings, alternating between clients, and recording with FrameView. Those details are useful because they show how the numbers were produced. They are still Badlion’s own results under Badlion’s own conditions. Treat them as a description of one test, not as a ranking that will hold on your hardware, and do not compare them directly with another vendor’s figures unless the test conditions match.

How to run a fair test on your PC
A fair comparison changes only the client. Keep the computer, Minecraft version, graphics settings, and in-game scenario constant, then measure frame rate and stutter in each run.
- Record your Minecraft: Java Edition version and mod loader, and confirm that each candidate supports them.
- Set one resolution, render distance, and graphics preset, and write them down.
- Choose a single world or server location and a fixed route, such as a walk through a village followed by a flight over a mountain range.
- Close background applications, then run the route once in each client to warm up caches, and discard that run.
- Run the same route at least three times in each client, alternating the order so one client is not always tested after a cold start.
- Capture average frame rate and frame-time spikes. FrameView, the tool Badlion names in its test description, is one option for recording these numbers on Windows. Any capture tool works if you use it the same way for every client.
- Compare the averages and the worst-case stutter, not a single peak number.
Checking compatibility before you install
- Confirm your exact Minecraft Java Edition version is listed as supported by the client or mod you plan to use.
- Confirm the mod loader required by the Sodium setup, or by Lunar’s Fabric-based add-on, is the one you have installed.
- Re-check the project page or client release notes after any Minecraft update, because support changes with releases.
- Keep a copy of your current settings so you can revert if a new client does not suit your setup.
If your results disagree with the claims
- One client is faster in one world but slower in another: the scene is affecting results. Repeat the test in a second location before drawing a conclusion.
- Your numbers vary widely between runs: background load, thermal throttling, or an uncontrolled setting is the likely cause. Repeat the runs after closing other programs.
- A mod does not load: the version or loader does not match. Compare the requirements against your installed Minecraft version before reinstalling.
- Frame rate improves but stutter remains: record frame-time spikes, not only averages, and compare the worst-case moments across clients.
Sodium is the most direct performance-first route, Lunar Client is the most convenient bundled option, and Badlion Client is a credible alternative whose published benchmarks should be read as its own results. The fastest client on your PC is the one your own controlled test identifies.
