For most solo players, a medium Terraria world is the best all-purpose choice. It gives you more room for exploration, building, treasure, and resources than a small world without the longer journeys and larger footprint of a large one. Choose small for a compact, quicker-to-traverse run; choose large when extensive building or long-term exploration matters more than travel time.
How Terraria world sizes compare
The Official Terraria Wiki lists these dimensions for mainline Desktop, Console, and Mobile worlds. The figures describe map dimensions and total map area; the accessible area is smaller. The wiki also states that one tile equals two feet.

Dimensions and map areas: Official Terraria Wiki, World size (accessed 2026). The Official Terraria Wiki’s getting-started guide describes medium as 50% larger than small and large as twice small by area; those comparisons differ from the ratios calculated from the listed dimensions and map areas. For a concrete comparison, the table uses the listed map areas.
Which size suits your solo playthrough?
| Choose | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Small | A compact run, shorter trips between locations, or less time spent setting up routes. | Less space and generally fewer generated treasures and natural resources. |
| Medium | A balanced first or all-purpose solo world with room to explore and build. | More travel than small, but less space and potential generation than large. |
| Large | Major builds, prolonged exploration, and long-term worlds where extra room is the point. | Longer travel and potentially more time for traversal and world generation. |
Pick small to reduce travel and setup
In a small world, the Dungeon, Jungle, Oceans, and other locations are closer together, and there is less distance to dig toward the Underworld. The Official Terraria Wiki also notes that Floating Islands are lower and easier to find, and that skybridges, hellevators, and teleporter networks take less work to construct. The trade-off is a more constrained building and exploration footprint, with fewer generated treasures and natural resources according to the getting-started guide.

There can be a combat wrinkle: the world-size page notes that Wyverns may spawn closer to the ground, making them easier to farm, though being above the treetops can also trigger their spawns.
Pick medium for a balanced default
Medium avoids the smallest map’s tighter limits while keeping the travel burden below that of a large world. It is a sensible first choice if you do not yet know whether you will prioritize compact travel or expansive building. The Official Terraria Wiki recommends keeping a first completion simple by using one world; medium is an editorial recommendation based on the guide’s stated trade-offs, not an official rule about solo play.

- Classic Terraria gameplay now with console specific control system, and a friendly crafting/item interface.
- Online multiplayer with you to 8 players! Split-screen multiplayer 2-4 players.

Pick large when extra space is worth the distance
Large gives you the most room for terrain, building, and exploration. The getting-started guide says bigger worlds can accommodate more treasure, resources, and terrain, and that a larger world can extend a playthrough. Choose it when those benefits matter more to you than longer trips and generation time.

No. Size changes theoretical maximum counts for some generated objects, but those counts are not guarantees for a particular seed. The Official Terraria Wiki lists these examples:

- 1250+ CRAFTING RECIPES - weapons, armor, potions, and more

| World size | Life Crystal theoretical maximum | Surface chest count listed |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 100 | 21 |
| Medium | 230 | 32 |
| Large | 403 | 42 |
These are the Official Terraria Wiki’s listed figures, accessed 2026; Life Crystal values are theoretical maxima, not promises. World generation can skip a large structure if there is no suitable location, while smaller structures may be overwritten or blocked. See the wiki’s World generation page. The getting-started guide broadly says small worlds generate fewer treasure items and natural resources, while large worlds allow nearly all possible terrain, treasure, and resources to generate in large quantities aside from rare structures; the result still varies by seed.
Can you use more than one world?
Yes. The Official Terraria Wiki’s getting-started guide recommends using one world at first to keep a first completion simple, while noting that you can create other worlds later. You do not have to treat your initial size choice as a permanent limit on every future playthrough.
