Y=12 is a practical default for bed-mining ancient debris, but it is not a proven optimum. Minecraft’s official bed-mining guide recommends Y=11, 12, or 15; its separate 2021 article says Y=15 has the highest average chance of finding debris. Neither source compares bed-mining yields across those levels.
Which Y level should you choose?
For a straightforward starting point, mine at Y=12. It is one of the three levels in Minecraft’s official bed-mining guidance, alongside Y=11 and Y=15. Choose Y=15 if you want to follow the level named in Minecraft’s older explanation of ancient-debris generation. There is no cited test showing that one of these levels produces more debris per bed than the others.

Why these levels are suggested
Ancient debris is the ore players seek when mining for netherite. Minecraft’s 2021 article says it is never exposed to air, so finding it requires digging. That article describes two possible generation bands in a chunk: Y=8–22 and Y=8–119, and says Y=15 has the highest average chance. The article also cautions that finding debris is not guaranteed. Some secondary search results give Y=16 as the highest average abundance, with a distribution from Y=8–24, while another describes Y=8–22 as a higher-concentration region. Those results do not establish a current-version peak. The practical, official bed-mining recommendation remains Y=11, 12, or 15.

How to bed-mine more safely
Beds explode when used in the Nether. Minecraft’s guide recommends digging tunnels, placing a bed at the end of each, and attempting to use it while sheltered behind a block. The explosion can injure or kill you, so prepare before triggering it.
- Dig a tunnel at Y=11, 12, or 15.
- Place a bed at the tunnel’s end.
- Move behind a block for protection, then try to use the bed.
- Check the exposed area for ancient debris before continuing.
Go in at full health, bring plenty of food, and wear diamond armor, as Minecraft’s guide advises. Beds consume wool and wood; the guide presents the method as a possible way to work faster than mining through large amounts of rock with a diamond pickaxe, not as a guaranteed or quantified improvement.

What to do when you find ancient debris
You need a diamond pickaxe to mine ancient debris. Smelt the debris into netherite scrap; four scraps and four gold ingots craft one netherite ingot. These are the in-game requirements described by Minecraft’s official guide. Minecraft.net, 2021-03-25
