What Is the Best Difficulty to Play Fallout: New Vegas?

For a first playthrough, start on Normal unless you already know you want an easier or harder fight. No difficulty is objectively best. The difficulty slider changes combat numbers and experience from kills, not the story or quest outcomes. Hardcore Mode is a separate switch with its own rules, so decide on it independently.

What the difficulty setting changes

The official Fallout: New Vegas manual describes gameplay difficulty as running from Very Easy to Very Hard. The setting governs three things: how much damage your attacks do to enemies, how much damage you take when you are hit, and how much experience you earn for each kill. The manual does not describe it as changing the story or quest outcomes.

The manual’s wording is:

“Separate from Hardcore Mode is the difficulty level of the gameplay. These range from Very Easy to Very Hard. This setting affects the amount of damage your attacks do to enemies and how much damage you take when hit. It also modifies how much experience you earn when killing enemies.”

The manual describes the direction of each effect rather than giving numeric multipliers, so expect a shift in balance rather than a precise dial. You can change the setting during play through the Options menu, which is useful if a fight feels too punishing or too easy after you have learned the systems.

Hardcore Mode is a separate choice

The manual treats Hardcore as a different way of playing rather than a higher rung on the difficulty slider:

“Separate from difficulty levels, this special way of playing the game creates a more strategic and complex experience that is tailored for more experienced Fallout players.”

  • Feel the Heat in New Vegas: Not even nuclear fallout could slow the hustle of Sin City. Explore the vast expanses of the desert wastelands from the small towns dotting the Mojave Wasteland to the bright lights of the New Vegas strip
  • Feuding Factions, Colorful Characters and a Host of Hostiles : A war is brewing between rival factions with consequences that will change the lives of all the inhabitants of New Vegas
  • New Systems : Enjoy new additions to Fallout: Special melee combat moves have been added to bring new meaning to the phrase "up close and personal"
  • An Arsenal of Shiny New Guns : With double the amount of weapons found in Fallout 3, you'll have more than enough new and exciting ways to deal with the threats of the wasteland and the locals
  • Let it Ride : In a huge, open world with unlimited options you can see the sights, choose sides, or go it alone. Peacemaker or Hard Case, House Rules, or the Wild Card, it's all in how you play the game

In Hardcore Mode, the character must eat, sleep, and stay hydrated. Damaged limbs require Doctor’s Bags or a doctor to treat, and ammunition has weight, so carrying capacity becomes part of inventory planning. Hardcore can be toggled in Options, but the Hardcore achievement requires it to stay on from the initial prompt through the endgame sequence. Turning it on partway through does not satisfy that requirement.

Because the two settings are independent, you can combine any combat level with Hardcore or without it.

Choosing a setting

Your priority Suggested setting What you gain and give up
Undecided on a first playthrough Normal A middle ground. Adjust after several fights if combat feels off.
Story, exploration, or low-stress combat Easy or Very Easy Your attacks do more damage and you take less when hit, so combat pressure drops. Kills earn more experience than at higher levels.
Familiar with the combat systems and want more pressure Hard or Very Hard You deal less damage, take more when hit, and earn less experience per kill.
Survival logistics Hardcore Mode, set independently of combat difficulty Adds hunger, sleep, hydration, limb treatment, and ammunition weight. The combat slider stays unchanged.

Combat factors beyond the setting

Difficulty is only one input to how fights feel. The manual says weapon effectiveness depends on your skill with the weapon, the weapon’s condition, and the target’s Damage Threshold (DT). Armor adds to your own DT, and higher DT reduces incoming damage. If a fight feels unfair on a given setting, check these before lowering difficulty:

  • Weapon condition: effectiveness depends on it, so repair weapons before a hard fight.
  • Weapon skill: improving the skill tied to your main weapon raises its effectiveness.
  • Weapon and ammunition against armor: match your choice to the target’s Damage Threshold rather than relying on raw damage.

What the community evidence does and does not show

No reliable statistic on which difficulty players prefer, or on outcomes by difficulty, is established by the official manual or the community material available for this guide. A recent Reddit discussion in r/fnv gives a sense of tastes: some players favor Normal or Hard as a challenge without excessive toughness, while others play Very Hard with Hardcore, or Easy for a relaxed, story-focused run. These are personal reports, not a survey, and no named developer or critic endorses one setting.

The manual referenced here is the Ultimate Edition PC manual. Menu labels and the way Hardcore is switched on may differ on other platforms or editions, and the material available here does not confirm those details for other versions.
