How combat differs
MH4U: three-dimensional hunts
Capcom presented MH4U around dynamic three-dimensional action and vertical movement. Its defining pitch is a sequel-shaped hunt in the Monster Hunter 4 setting, rather than a menu of combat styles.
MHGU: choose a Hunting Style and Hunter Arts
MHGU lets players select a Hunting Style, which changes available evasive moves or attacks. Hunter Arts are special actions players can equip; the number available can differ by style. These systems let players tailor how a weapon feels, rather than presenting one uniform combat approach. Capcom’s official manual explains Styles and Arts.
MHGU also has Prowler Mode
MHGU includes Prowler Mode, in which you play as a Felyne rather than taking the usual hunter role. Nintendo’s product listing identifies this as one of the game’s features.

They have different series roles
MH4U is a direct follow-up
MH4U is the western name for Monster Hunter 4G. Capcom described 4G as a sequel to Monster Hunter 4, retaining that game’s world and gameplay characteristics while adding monsters and other elements. Capcom announced the Japanese title and western naming in July 2014; the North American and European release followed on February 13, 2015. Capcom’s western announcement and announcement of the Japan release date for Monster Hunter 4G provide the naming and sequel context.
MHGU emphasizes series variety
MHGU is positioned around returning favorites and new monsters, with a broad roster alongside its Styles, Arts, and Prowler option. That makes it a different kind of draw from MH4U’s focused follow-up to one prior game. It is not simply a Switch port of MH4U.
