The base game does not include a living one. A living Gargantuan Leviathan appears in community mod content, most notably the Return of the Ancients mod, and that version is a separate creation with its own features.
What the base game says about it
The creature’s base-game presence is a Databank entry titled “Gargantuan Fossil.” The Subnautica Wiki reproduces the entry on its Databank (Subnautica) page. The entry’s central sentence reads:
“The fossilized remains of an extinct super predator.”
No human speaker or developer is named for that sentence in the reproduced text, so it should be credited to the in-game entry itself rather than to an individual writer. The entry describes an eel-like animal and says the fossil preserves only the front third of the specimen. Its rib-cage measurements are the basis for the eel-like description. The entry does not describe a living encounter.

- Classroom Science Use: Add the set to marine biology lessons, habitat projects, species identification, midnight-zone topics, school reports, dioramas, and oceanography activities.
- Safety And Material: Safety Tested and BPA Free, these hard plastic figurines are designed for kids ages 3+. The package carries a small-parts warning for children under 3 years.
The three-million-year figure
The entry gives the fossil’s age as “approximately three million years old.” That number is a fictional in-game estimate. It is not a real-world paleontological measurement, and the entry does not state a year or a study behind it. Readers who want a real creature with this kind of age should look to actual fossil research instead.
What the mod version adds
The living Gargantuan Leviathan is a community creation. The Steam Workshop listing for “Gargantuan Leviathan” identifies its creature as a mod addition and includes its own description, abilities, and a spawn command. The Subnautica Modding Wiki’s Gargantuan Leviathan page ties the creature to the Return of the Ancients mod.

- 1.25–3.75 INCH ANIMAL FIGURES: The assorted sizes are easy for children to arrange during imaginative play and compact enough for classroom activities, science projects, dioramas and tabletop displays.
- ENCOURAGES OCEAN DISCOVERY: Introduce children to lesser-known marine animals while encouraging questions, storytelling and an interest in ocean life. Recommended for kids ages 3 and up.
- REUSABLE STORAGE CASE INCLUDED: Keep the seven figures together between adventures or take the collection to school, playdates and family trips. The mini animals also work as cake toppers and under-the-sea party favors.
Those mod details belong to that listing. Attacks, abilities, dimensions, and spawn instructions described on the Workshop page should not be read as base-game facts. The Steam Workshop listing is the place to check the mod’s own claims.
Base game and mod version compared
| Question | Base-game fossil (Databank entry) | Community mod depiction (Return of the Ancients) |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Subnautica in-game Databank, “Gargantuan Fossil” | Steam Workshop mod listing and Subnautica Modding Wiki page |
| Alive in the content? | No. Described as extinct and existing only as fossilized remains | Yes, as a living creature added by the mod |
| Body description | Eel-like; only the front third of the specimen is preserved | Described on the Workshop page; not reproduced here |
| Age | “Approximately three million years old” (fictional in-game estimate; year not stated) | Not stated in the sources consulted |
| Abilities and attacks | Not stated in the Databank entry | Listed on the Workshop page; specific to the mod |
| Spawn method | Not applicable; fossil found in the game world | Spawn command listed on the Workshop page; specific to the mod |
What remains uncertain
- Canon status of fan depictions. No official developer statement on how fan creations relate to the base-game lore is cited here, so treat the mod version as separate from the game’s canon.
- Full biology. The Databank entry gives only the outline above. Any further anatomy, behavior, or size details come from interpretation or from mod listings and should be attributed to them.
- Size comparisons. The available sources do not support a reliable comparison of the Gargantuan Leviathan’s size against other Subnautica creatures.
The short answer to the two common questions is this: the base game contains the Gargantuan Leviathan only as a fossil, and a living version exists only through community mod content.
