For a straightforward, officially supported setup, use a single-partition external drive of up to 2 TB, formatted as FAT32. Sony warns that FAT32 partitions larger than 2 TB may not work properly. This is a practical ceiling based on Sony’s format guidance, not a published maximum tested across every PS3 model.
Why 2 TB is the practical limit
Sony’s PS3 guidance requires FAT32 for a USB hard disk to be recognized, and Sony’s storage guidance warns that a FAT32 partition over 2 TB may not work properly. Together, those rules make a single FAT32 partition of 2 TB or less the sensible choice for ordinary PS3 use. PlayStation Support Japan and Sony Support Japan do not publish a universal, model-by-model PS3 external-drive capacity table, so 2 TB should not be read as a guarantee for every drive or as proof that every larger configuration is impossible.
Sony also notes that MBR cannot access partition space above 2 TB. That is general disk guidance; it is not a PS3-specific test, and Sony’s cited PS3 material does not establish a supported GPT setup.
PS3 external-drive requirements at a glance
| Requirement | What to use or expect | Official guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | One partition up to 2 TB is the practical choice; larger FAT32 partitions may not work properly. | Sony Support Japan |
| File system | FAT32. PlayStation Support also lists FAT16, but FAT32 is the relevant option for an external hard drive. | PlayStation Support Japan; Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PS3 User’s Guide |
| Partitions | Use one. Multiple partitions are not supported. | PlayStation Support Japan |
| Maximum file size | FAT32: 4 GB per file. FAT16: 2 GB per file. | PlayStation Support Japan |
| NTFS or exFAT | Not supported by the cited PS3 external-storage guidance. | PlayStation Support Japan; Sony Support Japan |
How to prepare an external hard drive for PS3
- Back up anything on the drive. Formatting erases its contents, as Sony warns in its formatting guidance.
- Connect the drive to a computer. PlayStation Support says an external medium cannot be formatted on the PS3 itself.
- Create one FAT32 partition of no more than 2 TB. The PS3 does not support multiple partitions, and Sony warns that larger FAT32 partitions may not work properly.
- Connect it to the PS3 and check for recognition. Sony’s PS3 User’s Guide says a USB hard disk must be formatted as FAT32 to be recognized.
If the PS3 does not recognize the drive
- Check the file system: confirm it is FAT32, not NTFS or exFAT.
- Check the partition layout: make sure the drive has a single partition.
- Check the partition size: a FAT32 partition larger than 2 TB may not work properly.
- If a particular file will not copy, check its size: FAT32’s per-file limit is 4 GB, even when the drive has plenty of free space.
Sony’s compatibility rules do not guarantee every drive/model combination. If the drive meets these requirements and still is not recognized, the cited guidance does not establish a further universal fix.
