What Is the Nintendo Switch Mariko? Model Numbers and Battery Life

“Mariko” is the common nickname for the revised standard Nintendo Switch, officially identified as HAC-001(-01). Here’s how to check the model and understand Nintendo’s battery estimates.

“Mariko” is the common nickname for the later, more power-efficient revision of the standard Nintendo Switch. To identify one, look for model number HAC-001(-01); Nintendo’s Americas support guidance also lists serial numbers beginning XKW. Nintendo does not use “Mariko” as the model name, so the printed model number is the more reliable check.

What does “Mariko” mean?

Mariko is an informal hardware codename associated with the revised standard-size Nintendo Switch. In Nintendo’s consumer-facing identification, that revision is HAC-001(-01), rather than “Mariko.” The original standard Switch is HAC-001.

A secondary overview associates the revision with a more efficient Tegra X1+ chip and says it was announced on July 17, 2019, then released in Japan and North America in mid-August and in the United Kingdom in September. Nintendo’s support guidance confirms the model distinction and battery estimates, but does not name the chip or use the Mariko codename. See the secondary Nintendo Switch overview for that context.

How to identify a Mariko Switch

  1. Check the console’s model number. Nintendo identifies the revised standard model as HAC-001(-01); HAC-001 is the original standard model.
  2. Use the serial prefix as a supporting clue. Nintendo’s Americas guidance lists XKW for HAC-001(-01) and XAW for HAC-001. Serial prefixes are regional guidance, so the model number printed on the console is the clearest identifier.

Nintendo’s official battery-duration guidance gives these model identifiers and estimates.

  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps

  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

What changed from the original Switch?

The clearest consumer-facing difference established in Nintendo’s guidance is estimated battery runtime. Nintendo gives ranges rather than a guaranteed result; the software and features in use affect how long a charge lasts.

Standard Switch model Serial prefix in Nintendo Americas guidance Nintendo’s estimated battery runtime
HAC-001, original model XAW Approximately 2.5–6.5 hours
HAC-001(-01), revised model XKW Approximately 4.5–9 hours

The revised model’s longer published estimate is useful when choosing between otherwise comparable consoles, but it does not establish that every game runs longer by the same amount. Nintendo’s retrieved guidance does not identify a different display, game library, or performance tier for the revision.

What to know when buying a used revised Switch

The runtime figures above are Nintendo’s estimates, not a promise about a particular second-hand unit. Battery capacity declines with use. Nintendo says that after about 800 charge cycles, battery life falls to about 80% of that of a new console, and describes this as normal. A used HAC-001(-01) may therefore last less than the published new-system estimate.

  • Ask for a clear photo of the console’s printed model number rather than relying only on a listing title or the word “Mariko.”
  • Treat the serial prefix as a secondary check, particularly when evaluating a unit outside the Americas.
  • For a used console, consider its observed battery life and condition; the model number alone cannot establish the battery’s present capacity.

Charging time

Nintendo estimates approximately three hours to fully charge a Switch when it is powered off or in sleep mode. Charging takes longer while the console is being used. Regional technical information for the UK and Ireland names the Nintendo Switch AC adapter as model HAC-002; see Nintendo’s UKV technical information for local electrical details.
