The fastest supported way to reach level 20 in Valorant is to play full matches consistently and make sure you earn the bonus for your first win of each day. Riot’s published rules say account level rises with Account Points (AP), that each 5,000 AP adds one level, and that the first win of the day pays bonus AP. Riot does not publish AP per match, AP per hour, or a mode-by-mode ranking, so no mode can be named as the definitive fastest route, and no official estimate of hours to level 20 exists.
How much AP level 20 requires
Riot’s account-level explainer sets the threshold at 5,000 AP per level. Starting from level 1 with no AP already banked, you need 19 level increases, which works out to 95,000 AP in total. This is simple arithmetic from Riot’s per-level figure, not a number Riot has published as a typical time or match count.
- Starting point: level 1 with zero banked AP. An account that has already earned partial AP needs less.
- Per-level cost: 5,000 AP, the same at every level as far as Riot’s explainer describes.
- Total to level 20: 19 × 5,000 = 95,000 AP.
What earns Account Points
Account Points come from playing matches. Riot’s explainer, dated June 22, 2021, states: “You earn AP by playing matches.” It also says the AP you gain per match is based on the duration and result of that match, so a longer match or a win is not guaranteed to be worth a specific fixed amount. Riot does not publish the per-match values, which means you cannot work out AP per minute or compare modes from the official material.
Riot also states: “You will also be rewarded bonus AP for your first win of the day.” This is the only extra AP bonus the explainer names, and it is the one thing you can plan around every day.

Why Battle Pass XP and checkpoints do not count toward your level
Riot’s Progression Update Explainer + FAQ, dated June 15, 2023, separates three tracks: account level (AP), daily checkpoints, and weekly missions. Daily checkpoints and weekly missions award pass-related progression, not account AP. Grinding Battle Pass XP therefore will not move your account level, even though it feels like progress.
Daily checkpoints still matter for rewards, and the 2023 FAQ sets their progress rates by mode:

Is any mode faster for account level?
No mode can be confirmed as the fastest route to level 20 from Riot’s published material. The explainer ties AP to match duration and result, but gives no AP value for any mode, so a shorter match is not proven to earn more per minute than a longer one. Checkpoint rates are a different measure and do not answer the question.

If you want to choose between modes for leveling, the only comparison the official sources support is whether a mode contributes to daily checkpoints. Everything about AP per mode, and therefore leveling speed, is not stated by Riot.
A practical plan for leveling
- Win one match early in the day. The first win of the day earns bonus AP, so an early win is worth more to your level than a later one on the same day.
- Keep playing completed matches. AP comes from matches, so play through rather than abandoning games you expect to lose.
- Track checkpoints separately. If you care about daily rewards, count rounds won in the modes listed above; this does not change your account level.
- Use the Player Card to confirm progress. Your account level appears on your Player Card, and the level border changes every 20 levels, so you will see a visible change as you move through the bands.
Current rules and what to verify
The guidance here rests on two Riot publications: the account-level explainer dated June 22, 2021, and the Progression Update Explainer + FAQ dated June 15, 2023. Riot can change AP values, checkpoint rates and the first-win bonus, and the sources above do not show any later revision. Before relying on a specific number, check Riot’s current VALORANT account-leveling and progression pages.
