There is no single Y-level to dig for a Minecraft stronghold. The Minecraft Wiki says strongholds can generate at any Y-level, mostly underground, so follow Eyes of Ender to the structure’s horizontal location and search the nearby underground area rather than targeting one depth.
Do strongholds spawn at a specific Y-level?
No. The Minecraft Wiki’s Stronghold entry says strongholds generate at any Y-level and are mostly underground. They prefer biomes above sea level, but can generate underwater if necessary. Because the structure’s height varies, a fixed digging coordinate is not a dependable way to find one.
Mojang’s official Stronghold article explains how to locate one but does not specify a Y-level. The any-Y-level detail comes from the community-maintained Minecraft Wiki, not from Mojang.
How to find the stronghold without guessing its depth
- Bring Eyes of Ender. Throw one and follow the direction it travels to track the nearest stronghold, as Mojang describes.
- Carry extras. Mojang says each use has a one-in-five chance of breaking the Eye of Ender.
- When the eyes lead you to the location, search underground. Explore the area at different heights instead of digging a long shaft toward a presumed Y coordinate.
- Keep some eyes for the End Portal. The portal room has 12 frame blocks that need Eyes of Ender to activate, although some frames may already have an eye.
Java vs. Bedrock: what edition differences mean
Edition differences affect where strongholds are placed across the Overworld, not a universal vertical target. Mojang’s 2024 guidance describes Java strongholds as arranged in concentric rings around the world origin. In Bedrock Edition, they are distributed randomly through the Overworld at least 160 blocks from original spawn.

The Minecraft Wiki lists Java’s eight rings as containing 3, 6, 10, 15, 21, 28, 36, and 9 strongholds, for 128 total. Those figures describe horizontal placement; they do not tell you what Y-level to dig at.
Should you dig straight down?
No. A stronghold can be above or below the level you expect, and digging straight down is a risky way to search. Use Eyes of Ender to narrow down the location, then explore safely through nearby caves or mine in a controlled way. Check multiple heights if the first search does not reveal the structure.
