In vanilla Minecraft, you need an iron pickaxe or better to mine ordinary Overworld gold ore and collect the ore drop. A wooden, stone, or gold pickaxe can break it, but will not yield the ore.
Which pickaxes drop ordinary gold ore?
For ordinary gold ore in the Overworld, the minimum tier is iron. Diamond and netherite pickaxes also meet the requirement.
| Pickaxe tier | Can break ordinary gold ore? | Drops the ore? |
|---|---|---|
| Wooden | Yes | No |
| Stone | Yes | No |
| Gold | Yes | No |
| Iron | Yes | Yes |
| Diamond | Yes | Yes |
| Netherite | Yes | Yes |
The important distinction is between breaking a block and harvesting its resource: a pickaxe below iron tier can remove the block without producing the gold ore drop.
How Nether gold ore differs
Nether gold ore is a separate block and does not follow the ordinary Overworld gold ore drop behavior. The cited community reference says it drops gold nuggets when mined. Do not apply the Overworld ore-drop rule to Nether gold ore.
