What Is the World Limit in Minecraft Java Edition? Border Size and Coordinates

The default Minecraft Java Edition world border sits at X and Z ±29,999,984 blocks, while players can reach about ±30 million. Here is how the border, the coordinate limit, /worldborder and Nether conversion fit together.

The default world border in Minecraft Java Edition sits at X and Z coordinates of ±29,999,984, measured from the centre at (0, 0). Players can travel to roughly ±30,000,000 blocks on each horizontal axis, so the visible border line sits just inside the outer coordinate limit. This article covers the horizontal limit only; the vertical build height is a separate question.

The default border numbers

Measure Default value (Java Edition, Overworld) What it means
Border edge, X and Z ±29,999,984 blocks The configured world border line on each horizontal axis.
Border width and length (diameter) 59,999,968 blocks The full span across the border. It is not the distance from the centre to the edge.
Default centre (0, 0) Can be moved with commands.
Outer player-coordinate limit Approximately ±30,000,000 blocks A separate boundary that players can reach, not the visible border line.

The 16-block gap between the border edge and 30 million is a property of the default border size. Because the diameter is 59,999,968 blocks and the border is centred on zero, each edge sits 29,999,984 blocks from the centre.

Why the border and the 30-million limit differ

The world border is the boundary the game uses to limit the playable area in a given dimension. The outer coordinate limit is a larger, separate boundary at roughly ±30,000,000. Players cannot freely continue past that outer coordinate limit, but chunks can generate beyond the visible border. In practice, terrain can exist on the far side of the border line even though the border itself marks where the configured play area ends.

When planning builds, travel routes or server maps, treat the border edge as the practical boundary and the roughly 30-million figure as the ceiling for coordinates.

Checking and changing the border with /worldborder

Java Edition uses the /worldborder command family to query and change the border. You need operator permissions on the world or server to run these commands.

  1. Check the current size. Open the chat window and run /worldborder get. The game returns the current width of the border in blocks.
  2. Set a new size. Run /worldborder set <distance> to set the width and length of the border. Adding a time value after the distance makes the change happen gradually over that duration instead of instantly.
  3. Move the centre. Run /worldborder center <x> <z> to shift the border’s centre away from (0, 0).
  4. Respect the maximum. The command reference lists 59,999,968 blocks as the maximum size, which matches the default diameter, so the border cannot be widened beyond the default span through this command.

After changing a border, run /worldborder get again to confirm the new width before relying on it.

Borders are set per dimension from Java 1.21.9

Since Java Edition 1.21.9, the world border is dimension-specific. Each dimension (Overworld, Nether and End) can have its own size and position. A command affects only the dimension in which it is run, so changing the Overworld border does not change the Nether or End borders.

Do not assume that one configured border applies identically in every dimension. To check, switch into each dimension and run /worldborder get. On multiplayer servers, record the centre and size for each dimension separately. The change is documented in the official Minecraft 1.21.9 release notes.

Nether coordinates

Nether horizontal coordinates scale by a factor of eight relative to the Overworld. To estimate where an Overworld position maps in the Nether, divide the X and Z values by eight. This is coordinate conversion, not a rule that every dimension’s border is set to the same size.

Overworld coordinate Corresponding Nether coordinate
±29,999,984 (default border edge) ±3,749,998
±30,000,000 (approximate outer limit) ±3,750,000

How the figures were established

The dimension-specific behaviour comes from the official Minecraft 1.21.9 release notes. The default edge coordinate, diameter and command limits come from technical reference material on Java Edition rather than an official technical specification, so treat those values as the commonly documented defaults. A current secondary coordinate reference, dated 15 September 2026 and checked against Java Edition 26.3, agrees with the default edge and the Nether conversion. Values in servers or custom world setups can differ from these defaults.
