Terraria’s PC version is written in C#. The game’s own FAQ, as quoted in a Steam discussion from June 14, 2015, says it was built “in C# in the XNA Game Studio.” That makes C# the language and XNA Game Studio the development environment. The evidence covers the PC version, and it describes the game’s history rather than the code of every current build.
What the FAQ wording says
The clearest statement on record appears in a Steam Community discussion titled “What programming language is Terraria written in?”, posted June 14, 2015. The thread reproduces a response attributed to Terraria’s FAQ: “What language is Terraria being created in? We’re making it in C# in the XNA Game Studio.” The discussion is a secondary record. The archived FAQ page itself could not be retrieved, and the quoted response does not name an individual or role, so it should be credited to the FAQ as reproduced in that thread rather than to a named developer.

Language versus framework
The answer has two parts that are easy to blur:
- Programming language: C#, the language named in the FAQ wording.
- Development environment: XNA Game Studio, the environment the same wording names as the historical tool used to build the game.
XNA Game Studio is not a programming language, and it should not be listed alongside C# as one. A short answer such as “C# with XNA Game Studio” is accurate. Calling Terraria an “XNA language” is not.
What the evidence does not establish
The sources support a historical, PC-focused answer. They do not show which language or framework each platform build uses today, so avoid three claims:

- That the console and mobile editions share the PC codebase.
- That XNA Game Studio is still the framework used by every current release.
- That the 2015 wording describes any build made after that date.
Where those questions matter, the honest answer is that the implementation is not stated in the available sources for those versions.
Reader phrasing and when the answer is needed
Most people ask the question in one of two forms: “What language is Terraria written in?” or “What programming language is Terraria written in?” The Steam thread uses the second form and narrows its context to “the PC version.” Keeping that qualifier in the answer prevents readers from assuming a platform-wide claim.

Modding and access to the source code
Terraria’s source code is proprietary. The tModLoader project describes itself as open-source, community-driven software for modifying and expanding Terraria, and it identifies Terraria as separate proprietary software. Its terms of use, in the 1.4.5 branch (last updated November 3, 2023), state:
“The TML Software makes it possible to make and play mods for Terraria and load such mods into the TML Mod Browser without accessing the source code of Terraria.”

- MULTIPLAYER! Wi-fi games support up to 8 players cross-platform on any mobile device!
- 1250+ CRAFTING RECIPES - weapons, armor, potions, and more
- 400+ ENEMIES
- 50+ BLOCK TYPES to build anything you can imagine!
- 15+ PETS
In practice, that means a player or modder can build mods for the game without the game’s source. Knowing the language is C# does not give access to the code, and the terms do not describe the internal structure of the game.
