Y=15 is the best single level to target for ancient debris, the Nether block used to make netherite, according to Minecraft’s official guidance. That is an average probability peak, not a guarantee. If you plan to use beds to expose debris, Minecraft also suggests tunnels at Y=11, Y=12, or Y=15.
Why Y=15 is the best target
There is no block called “netherite ore” to mine. The material you need is ancient debris, which generates embedded in Nether rock and can be smelted into netherite scrap. Minecraft’s official explanation of netherite scrap says: “On average, level 15 gives you the highest chance to find some, but no guarantees.”
Use Y=15 as a practical target when mining for ancient debris. It is the highest-chance level in that guidance, not a promise that a particular tunnel will contain debris.
What the other Y-level guidance means
Minecraft’s guide to finding ancient debris recommends tunnels at Y=11, Y=12, or Y=15 for its bed-mining approach. The sources do not give a controlled comparison of yields at those three levels, so they do not establish that Y=11 or Y=12 is faster or safer than Y=15.

The same official explanation describes two possible vein-generation attempts per chunk: one in the Y=8–22 band and another in the Y=8–119 band. Ancient debris does not generate exposed to air, so a vein may remain hidden inside Nether rock. These generation ranges describe where debris may occur; they do not predict how much a player will find in a tunnel or per hour.
How to mine for it
Mining at Y=15
For a straightforward approach, dig through Nether rock at Y=15 and look for ancient debris embedded in the surrounding blocks. Bring a diamond pickaxe: it is required to mine ancient debris successfully. A lower-tier pickaxe will not collect the block.

Using beds to expose debris
Beds explode when used in the Nether. Minecraft’s guide suggests digging tunnels at Y=11, Y=12, or Y=15 for this method, and advises triggering each bed from behind a block. The blast can injure you, so the guide also recommends keeping full health and food and wearing diamond armor. This is an explosive method with its own risk, not evidence that any one of the three levels produces better yields.
Turn ancient debris into netherite
- Mine ancient debris with a diamond pickaxe.
- Smelt the debris to make netherite scrap.
- Combine four netherite scraps with four gold ingots to craft one netherite ingot.
The four-scrap and four-gold recipe is the conversion step after finding debris; it does not change which Y-level is the best place to search.

Scope of the recommendation
The level recommendation and mining advice above come from official Minecraft guidance published in 2021 and 2022. Those pages do not provide a Java-versus-Bedrock comparison, a version-by-version generation table, or measured yield tests for Y=11, Y=12, and Y=15. The supported answer is therefore the official general guidance: target Y=15 for the highest average chance, while treating the bed-mining levels as suggested options rather than a ranked yield comparison.
