Redrix’s Claymore is the best-documented answer—but only as a historical result. A Bungie player-ownership snapshot from 2018, reported by Guinness World Records, counted 8,750 owners. That figure does not establish which weapon is rarest today: it is not a current census, and Bungie later brought some formerly limited-time or unobtainable rewards back into circulation.
Why Redrix’s Claymore is the historical answer
Guinness World Records identifies Redrix’s Claymore as Destiny 2’s rarest weapon based on a Bungie player-activity infographic dated August 2, 2018. The snapshot counted 8,750 players who owned Redrix’s Claymore. For comparison, it counted 194,051 players who owned Whisper of the Worm. These are historical ownership counts, not drop rates or estimates of present-day ownership. Guinness World Records’ record entry provides the figures.

What “rarest” means—and what it does not
Here, “rarest” means the fewest players owned a named weapon in that 2018 snapshot. It does not refer to Destiny 2’s colored rarity tiers or prove that the weapon had the lowest chance of dropping.
Bungie’s guide describes the game’s Uncommon, Rare, Legendary, and Exotic categories, and calls Exotics the most exclusive weapons. That is a separate use of “rarity”: an Exotic’s tier does not by itself tell you how many players own it. Bungie’s guide to Guardian gear explains the tiers and acquisition overview.

Rarity is also different from difficulty to obtain. Guinness describes Redrix’s Claymore’s original route as requiring a high Glory Crucible rank and hundreds of matches at an average win-loss ratio. That explains why the weapon was difficult to earn in its historical context; it does not establish its current acquisition route.
Is Redrix’s Claymore still the rarest weapon?
There is not enough current ownership data here to name a present-day winner. The 2018 count is the directly sourced comparison, while no current comprehensive weapon-ownership ranking or updated Redrix’s Claymore total is established. Guinness also notes that records can change daily and are not published online immediately.

Availability has changed since that snapshot. Bungie’s June 4, 2026 preview of the Monument of Triumph described rewards returning that had been limited-time or previously unobtainable. The preview also named specific returning items, but does not establish that Redrix’s Claymore itself was among them. Bungie’s Monument of Triumph preview shows why old ownership figures should not be treated as a current ranking.
Bungie’s support guide says that Update 9.7.0 was released on June 9, 2026, and that all content available before the update, plus content added in 9.7.0, would remain available on and after that date. It also says Destiny 2 would no longer receive planned live-service content updates, while allowing for possible hotfixes for game health and stability. This describes the content-update schedule and availability policy; it does not supply a new ownership census. Bungie’s Update 9.7.0 support guide has the details.

Why weapon versions matter
A weapon’s name alone may not capture its full acquisition history. In its BRAVE Arsenal developer article, Bungie said many original versions of legacy weapons could no longer be acquired and distinguished them from Into the Light versions with updated perk pools. Consequently, a claim about ownership or availability should specify whether it means an original item or a reissued version. This distinction is useful context, but it does not provide a current ownership count for Redrix’s Claymore. Bungie’s BRAVE Arsenal developer insight discusses those versions.

How to read the answer
- Historical ownership record: Redrix’s Claymore, with 8,750 owners in the 2018 Bungie snapshot reported by Guinness.
- Current rarest weapon: Not established by a current comprehensive ownership ranking.
- Rarity tier: A separate in-game category; an Exotic is not automatically the least-owned weapon.
- Hardest to obtain: A different question from how many players own an item, and dependent on the acquisition route and time period.
