What Makes Hades So Bad? The Myth, the Underworld, and the Modern Villain

Hades’ grim realm helps explain why he seems frightening, but the Persephone myth gives readers a separate reason to judge his actions harshly. Ancient accounts also implicate Zeus, while the idea of Hades as Satan-like owes much to modern portrayals.

Hades seems “bad” for three different reasons: he rules the realm of the dead, he takes Persephone in a story that raises serious questions about consent, and modern stories often recast him as a devil-like villain. Those ideas are related, but they are not interchangeable. The ancient accounts make him a fearsome and morally complicated god—not simply the Greek equivalent of Satan.

Why Hades has a frightening reputation

Hades rules the underworld and the dead. That role makes him a natural focus for fear: his realm is associated with death, mourning, and funeral rites. Hesiod describes him as “pitiless in heart, who dwells under the earth,” in passages collected by Theoi’s collection of ancient references to Hades.

But ruling the dead is not the same as being a devil or a universal punisher. The ancient material supports Hades’ grim associations; it does not, by itself, cast him as an evil tempter. His reputation can feel ominous even without making him a straightforward embodiment of evil.

What Hades does to Persephone in the myth

The strongest reason to judge Hades harshly is the story of Persephone. In the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, Persephone is gathering flowers when Hades takes her. The hymn says she was “given to him by all-seeing Zeus”: Zeus has agreed to the arrangement without Demeter’s knowledge. The narrative follows Demeter’s search and grief, not a consensual romance between Hades and Persephone.

  • Defy the god of the dead as you hack and slash out of the Underworld in this rogue-like dungeon crawler from the creators of Bastion and Transistor.
  • As the immortal Prince of the Underworld, you'll wield the powers and mythic weapons of Olympus to break free from the clutches of the god of the dead himself.

By contemporary standards, taking Persephone without her knowledge or consent makes Hades culpable. Zeus’s role matters too: the arrangement is not portrayed as Hades acting alone, since the hymn implicates Zeus in giving her to him. That context does not erase Hades’ actions or make the abduction consensual.

Ancient versions do not tell every detail the same way

Hesiod’s Theogony, as quoted in Theoi’s collection, likewise says that “wise Zeus gave her to him.” Another version attributed to Pseudo-Apollodorus describes Zeus helping Hades secretly abduct Persephone and says she spends a third of each year with Hades. That fraction belongs to this particular retelling; it should not be treated as a detail stated identically in every version of the myth.

Hades II - Nintendo Switch™ 2 Edition
  • Battle beyond the Underworld using dark sorcery to take on the Titan of Time in this bewitching sequel to the award-winning rogue-like dungeon crawler.

These variations are a reminder to separate the shared core of the story from details that depend on the source. Zeus’s involvement appears in the accounts cited here, while the length of Persephone’s time in the underworld varies across tellings.

Is Hades the Greek version of Satan?

No—not in the simple sense often suggested by modern adaptations. An abstract titled “Hades: from Ancient Myth to Modern Film,” presented for the Classical Association of the Midwest and South, argues that popular US culture often maps Hades onto hell or Satan, while ancient literature and visual art do not portray him as evil or satanic. The author writes: “Nevertheless, despite these attributions, in ancient literature and visual arts, Hades is not portrayed as evil or satanic.”

That is the author’s interpretation of selected ancient material and modern film examples, not a survey of every portrayal. It helps explain why a modern version of Hades may seem more villainous than the ancient figure, but it does not settle how to judge his conduct toward Persephone.

How to judge Hades without collapsing the questions

  • As ruler of the dead: Hades presides over a feared realm, which explains his ominous reputation without making him a Satan-like figure.
  • In the Persephone story: the abduction is a disturbing act to judge by modern standards of consent, and Zeus is also implicated in the arrangement.
  • In modern portrayals: mapping Hades onto Satan is a later cultural framing, not a neutral summary of the ancient accounts.

For a closer look at the poem that places Demeter’s grief at the center of the story, George Alexander Gazis’s 2018 book Homer and the Poetics of Hades examines how Homer uses the underworld as a distinctive poetic setting where shades can recount the past from personal viewpoints.
