Its four campaigns changed tone and style, while cutscenes, quick-time events and scripted set pieces repeatedly interrupted play. Some mechanics inherited from survival horror—such as slow animations, knockback and cumbersome healing—could also feel clumsy in the game’s more linear action sequences. That helps explain the criticism, but it does not mean every player disliked the game or that it had no strengths.
Why did Resident Evil 6 get so much criticism?
The central complaint was a mismatch between the game’s shifting ambitions and its moment-to-moment design. It wanted to deliver horror, action and cinematic set pieces across four interconnected campaigns, but the changes in style could make the whole experience feel uneven. Critics also objected to how often the game interrupted direct play with scripted events.

GameSpot’s review described a recurring pattern of brief movement followed by a cutscene, quick-time event, combat sequence or wait for a co-op partner. Camera shifts and scripted “gotcha” moments added to the sense that the game was taking control away from the player. The review criticized overlong quick-time events, mediocre set pieces and abrupt events that could cause unavoidable deaths. GameSpot’s review
Interruptions weakened the flow
Cutscenes and set pieces can build suspense when they support the action around them. The criticism here was about their frequency and handling: players could be pulled out of movement or combat for another scripted sequence, then asked to react quickly or endure a sudden death. That made some stretches feel less like continuous play and more like a succession of interruptions.

Why could the combat feel clumsy?
Some mechanics associated with survival horror did not always fit the game’s more linear action sequences. GameSpot’s other review noted that long animations could delay the return of control, while knockback and cumbersome healing made combat feel awkward. Those forms of friction can reinforce vulnerability in a tense survival-horror setting; in a fast-moving action context, they could instead hinder enjoyment. GameSpot’s review
Resource pressure was inconsistent
Ammunition was not often scarce on medium difficulty, according to the review, though some boss encounters were exceptions. That meant the game could retain cumbersome combat mechanics without consistently creating the resource pressure that might make them feel purposeful.

Did the four campaigns make the game uneven?
The campaigns were designed to vary in tone and play style. Their stories overlap and then diverge, and their changing focus gives the game variety. But those shifts could also make the overall experience feel less consistent, especially alongside the interruptions and changes in pacing noted by critics. GameSpot characterized the full experience as a mixture of modes and interruptions. GameSpot’s review
Director Eiichiro Sasaki’s account of development helps explain the challenge without proving that any one decision caused the reception. He said the team began by imagining situations it wanted in the game and then worked out where the story should go. He also described blending the script with level and game design as a major challenge. In a PlayStation.Blog interview, Sasaki said: “Trying to blend everything from the script with the game design and make that come together was really a challenge.”

What did Capcom say about the game’s performance?
Capcom’s February 2013 comments concerned its assessment of the game’s commercial performance and development processes—not a definitive explanation of every player’s or reviewer’s reaction. The company said Resident Evil 6 had shipped five million copies, but that the new development challenges had not sufficiently appealed to users. It also cited inadequate collaboration among development, marketing, promotion and planning teams, and said it had not yet reached a clear conclusion about the results. GameSpot’s report on Capcom’s comments
Capcom’s 2013 shipment target was seven million copies, compared with the five million copies shipped that it reported. These are company-reported shipment figures from that period, not sales figures or a measure of critical opinion. Capcom’s statement that its development challenges had not sufficiently appealed to users is relevant context, but it does not establish a single cause for the game’s reception.

Was Resident Evil 6 entirely without strengths?
No. The criticism was not that the game lacked horror or redeeming qualities. GameSpot’s review recalled tense scenes in Leon’s campaign and praised the production values, sound, voice acting and interlocking stories. The issue was how those strengths sat alongside uneven pacing, repeated interruptions and mechanics that could feel poorly suited to the action.
The scale of development offers context, not a verdict: a 2012 Game Developer report said more than 600 people were involved when outside partners and outsourced work were included. That number alone does not explain the design or its reception.
What to keep in mind when judging the criticism
- Horror tension versus action spectacle: the game shifts between different tones and styles rather than maintaining one consistent approach.
- Player control versus cinematic interruption: quick-time events, cutscenes and scripted sequences were a specific source of criticism.
- Resource pressure versus combat flow: ammunition was not often scarce on medium difficulty, while some inherited combat frictions could make encounters feel cumbersome.
- Variety versus consistency: four differing campaigns offered range, but their shifts could contribute to an uneven overall experience.
These are useful ways to understand why the game was criticized, not a universal scorecard. Reviews and Capcom’s comments point to different perspectives: critics discussed play and pacing, while Capcom discussed user appeal and internal collaboration.
