Most characters in Hollow Knight: Silksong are presented as bugs or other creatures, but Team Cherry does not give every named character a real-world insect species. The clearest confirmed example is Trobbio, whom the developer explicitly calls a butterfly. For Lace, Shakra, Sherma, Garmond, and Zaza, the official character descriptions do not name an exact species, so visual similarities are best treated as interpretations rather than canon.
What kind of bugs are these characters?
Team Cherry introduced Silksong’s new cast as “an all new cast of wild, strange bugs” living in Pharloom, a haunted kingdom associated with faith and pilgrimage. The game’s official description likewise presents a world of bugs and beasts, not a natural-history setting with a species label for every character. That distinction matters: a character can look insect-like without the game confirming a particular species. Of the characters covered in Team Cherry’s introduction, Trobbio is the one whose insect type is explicitly stated.
Which Silksong characters have a confirmed bug type?

Team Cherry describes Trobbio as “the flamboyant butterfly Trobbio.” That makes butterfly the clearest confirmed identification in the official character introduction. Lace, Shakra, Sherma, Garmond, and Zaza are not assigned species there
The same introduction describes the following characters through their roles or personalities, without naming a real-world insect type:
- Lace: A lithe fencer who wields a gilded pin, described as Pharloom’s traditional weapon.
- Shakra: A warrior searching for her missing master; she belongs to a fighting clan and works as a cartographer.
- Sherma: An optimistic pilgrim on a spiritual journey.
- Garmond and Zaza: Garmond is described as a rambunctious older bug, and Zaza as his noble steed.

Are Silksong characters based on real insects?
Silksong uses insect-inspired designs, but the official descriptions cited here do not confirm that every character corresponds to a specific real insect. It is reasonable to describe a resemblance as a visual analogy—for example, saying a design looks moth-like—but that is different from stating that the character is a moth.
The game’s Hunter’s Journal also uses descriptive creature labels. One example indexed by the Hollow Knight Wiki describes a dragonfly creature as a “Flighty insect that lives beside still waters.” That entry concerns a particular creature; it does not establish a species for the named characters above or turn Pharloom into a real-world taxonomy. How to distinguish confirmed lore from a fan identification
- Explicit developer wording: Treat a species name used in an official character description, such as “butterfly” for Trobbio, as confirmed in that description.
- In-game creature label: A Journal entry can identify the creature it describes, but should not be generalized to other characters.
- Visual resemblance: Use qualified wording such as “resembles” or “looks insect-inspired” unless an official source names the type.
- Unspecified species: When an official description gives a role or personality but no insect type, the accurate answer is that the cited description does not specify one.
Team Cherry’s official character descriptions support a broad answer—Pharloom’s inhabitants include bugs and other creatures—and one precise identification: Trobbio is a butterfly. They do not support a complete species-by-species classification of the named cast.
