It depends on your Minecraft edition and installed software. The cited Bedrock syntax is /ability <player> flySpeed <value>; vanilla Java Edition has no built-in /flyspeed command. Java mods and server plugins can add one, but their syntax and requirements differ.
Bedrock Edition: use the ability command
A secondary reference gives this Bedrock command syntax:
/ability <player> flySpeed <value>
To target yourself, its syntax implies /ability @s flySpeed <value>. Replace <value> with the desired flying-speed setting. The reference does not establish a universal value range for this command, so do not assume values documented for a mod or plugin apply here. The reference also does not establish that the command works in every Bedrock world or server configuration.
Speed is not flight permission
Changing flySpeed does not necessarily grant permission to fly. The Bedrock reference treats flight permission, commonly associated with mayfly, as separate from flying speed. You may need the relevant permission as well as the speed setting, and command access depends on the world or server’s permissions.

Microsoft Learn describes minecraft:flying_speed as an entity component whose speed value is measured in blocks per tick. That is entity-behavior documentation, not a player-command reference, so it does not independently verify the /ability syntax above: Microsoft Learn: minecraft:flying_speed.
Java Edition: the command depends on a mod or plugin
According to the cited reference, vanilla Java Edition does not include a built-in /flyspeed command. A Java mod or server plugin may add one; identify which software provides it before using a command or speed range.

FlySpeed server plugin
The Modrinth listing for the Java server plugin FlySpeed specifies /flyspeed <value>, with values from 1 to 10. It lists Bukkit, Paper, Purpur, and Spigot, and Minecraft 1.20.x and 1.21–1.21.8 compatibility. The listed permission is flyspeed.use; the listing says operators receive it by default. These details apply to this plugin, not to vanilla Java or other implementations.
Flyspeed (Creative Flight) Fabric mod
The separate Fabric mod Flyspeed (Creative Flight) specifies /flyspeed <multiplier> and describes a 1x–500x range. Its listing describes client-side operation and compatibility with Minecraft Java 1.20.x and 1.21.x. Do not substitute its multiplier range for the plugin’s 1–10 values: the implementations are distinct.

Why does /flyspeed say “unknown command”?
- Check your edition. In Bedrock, the cited syntax uses
/ability; in vanilla Java,/flyspeedis not built in. - Identify the software that should provide the command. On Java, determine whether the client has the relevant mod or the server runs the relevant plugin. The examples above have different platform requirements.
- Check version and permission. Compare the game version and loader or server platform with the implementation’s listing, then confirm you have its required permission. For the named plugin, that permission is
flyspeed.use. - Keep command syntax and values specific to that implementation. A plugin’s
<value>syntax and 1–10 range are not interchangeable with the Fabric mod’s<multiplier>syntax and 1x–500x range.
