The first player to get it in wins. The name is also used for unrelated things, so this guide focuses on the party version and flags the others.
How the party version works
Each player needs one OREO or a similar sandwich cookie. Hosts often run it as a race, though some versions use a timer instead. The core rule is the same in every published version: no hands.
- Give each participant one cookie.
- Have players sit or stand with their faces tilted upward, then place the cookie on the center of each forehead.
- Start the round together. Players use facial movement to lower the cookie down the face toward the mouth. Hands stay down, and nothing may be used to hold or push the cookie.
- The first player to get the cookie into their mouth wins, or, in a timed or fastest-time format, the best time wins.
Published versions compared
Three sources describe the game in enough detail to compare. They do not agree on every rule, so decide the rules before the round starts and tell players.
| Source | Format | Win condition | Extra rules | Date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gold Arrow Camp, “Games From GAC” | Race; allows an OREO or another cookie | First to get the cookie into the mouth | Not stated | Not stated |
| Wabash County YMCA, “2025 Corporate Cup Manual” | Players sit and lean back; cookie starts at the center of the forehead | Fastest time | Cookie must stay in contact with the face and must not be tossed | 2025 |
| Jewish Camp, “CORNERSTONE 2020 Resource” | One-minute round using facial muscles and gravity | Not stated | Time limit of one minute | 2020 |
Choices to settle before you play
- Race or timer. A race ends when one player succeeds. A timed round gives everyone the same window, and the cookie may end up partly eaten or not reach the mouth at all, so decide how a missed round is scored.
- Sitting or standing. The YMCA manual specifies sitting and leaning back. Standing players usually tilt their heads further, which changes how easily gravity helps.
- Contact rule. Requiring the cookie to stay touching the face makes the game harder and rules out a quick flick. Informal versions often allow it.
- Cookie choice. The camp instructions accept an OREO or another cookie. A special flavor is not required.
Other things called “the Oreo game”
The name does not refer to only one game. Two other uses turn up in search results:

- An older mobile game. A university thesis on gamification in marketing describes an Oreo-branded mobile game called “Oreo: Twist, Lick, Dunk.” The thesis is a secondary description, and this guide did not confirm the game’s current availability.
If you searched for a video game, the mobile title is the closest match, but the forehead challenge is the party game.
About the cookie
In January 2025, Mondelēz International announced OREO Game Day cookies: signature OREO cookies stamped with five football-inspired embossments. That is a product release, not a rule for the game, so any OREO or similar cookie works. Check current availability before buying a specific variety for an event.

Common questions answered by the rules above
The forehead challenge needs no equipment beyond the cookies and an agreed time or finish line. If you need a timer, any clock or phone works, since no published version requires a specific device.
For a clean round, write the rules on a card: the cookie starts on the forehead, hands stay down, the cookie must reach the mouth, and the winner is decided by race or fastest time.
