Silence is the best-supported answer to “What is the rarest armor trim in Minecraft?” It appears in Ancient City chests, with a Minecraft Wiki loot-table summary listing a 1.2% chance per chest. Treat that as a qualified answer, not a guaranteed all-edition ranking: the official notes reviewed do not provide a current numerical comparison of every trim across Java and Bedrock.
Why Silence is considered the rarest armor trim
Mojang’s Java 1.20 release notes place both the Silence and Ward smithing templates in Ancient Cities. The Minecraft Wiki’s loot-table summary gives the Silence template a 1.2% chance per Ancient City chest.
That percentage describes an individual chest, not the odds of finding Silence after visiting a particular number of chests or cities. The cited figure is from a secondary source; the official release notes establish the location but do not give this numeric rate or a complete probability table for all trims.
Why there is no definitive all-version ranking
Armor-trim availability depends on edition and version. For example, Bedrock’s 1.21 release notes add the Bolt template to Vaults and the Flow template to Ominous Vaults. Those additions make a ranking that ignores edition or version incomplete.

Rarity has also changed over time. In its Java Snapshot 23w05a notes, Mojang said the Vex template had been made much more likely to find because it had been too rare. A structure’s difficulty or remoteness is not itself a drop rate, so it should not be used as a substitute for comparable loot probabilities.

What to know before using a rare template
A trim is cosmetic: it changes armor’s appearance, not its gameplay benefits. The template determines the pattern, while the material used for trimming determines the color, as explained in the Java 1.20 release notes.

Smithing templates are consumed when used. The official Java 1.20 notes also explain that a template can be copied with seven diamonds, one matching material block, and the original template. Finding one is therefore different from having multiple copies available for use.
