1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.5 and later, a giant phantom is created by summoning a normal phantom with a size value of 10 in its entity data: /summon minecraft:phantom ~ ~ ~ {size:10}. The lowercase size field is the current spelling. Older Java versions use {Size:10}, and the Bedrock /summon command does not document a way to set phantom size, so do not assume the Java version works there.
The command for Java Edition 1.21.5 and later
Run the following in chat, or in a command block, with cheats enabled on the world:
/summon minecraft:phantom ~ ~ ~ {size:10}
The ~ ~ ~ part uses relative coordinates, so the phantom appears at the position of the player or block running the command. To place it elsewhere, replace those three values with absolute coordinates, such as /summon minecraft:phantom 120 70 -45 {size:10}. The number 10 is the value used in the cited example, not a tested maximum. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.21.5 release notes state: “The Size field has been renamed to size.” That rename is why the lowercase form is the one to use on 1.21.5 and later.
Older Java versions
Before 1.21.5, the same command uses the uppercase field name:

/summon minecraft:phantom ~ ~ ~ {Size:10}
Some third-party command generators, including the MinecraftMaps “Summon Phantom Generator,” still output the uppercase form. That output conflicts with Mojang’s 1.21.5 release notes, so treat it as a legacy format and check your game version before copying it.

Not stated | Microsoft Learn, “summon Command — Minecraft Bedrock stable” (last updated 2024-08-01); the page documents entity type, location, rotation, spawn event and name tag, not phantom size |
The entity ID does not change: a giant phantom is still minecraft:phantom with a size value applied. The only compatibility difference between Java versions is the capitalization of the field.

Bedrock Edition
The command on this page is a Java Edition command that uses Java entity data. Bedrock’s documented /summon command has its own syntax and requires cheats. The Microsoft Learn page does not describe a Bedrock equivalent for changing phantom size, so no Bedrock command for a giant phantom is given here. If you are playing on Bedrock, the cited documentation is the only source to check for supported syntax.
If the command is rejected
- Confirm you are in Java Edition. The
{size:10}syntax belongs to Java entity data, and Bedrock uses different syntax. - Check your Java version. On 1.21.5 and later, use
size. On earlier versions, useSize. - Confirm cheats are enabled for the world, because the Bedrock
/summondocumentation states that the command requires cheats. The cited sources do not describe the Java world-permission setting in detail, so check your world’s settings if the command still fails. - Check the coordinates. If you replaced
~ ~ ~with absolute values, confirm they are valid numbers separated by spaces.
How phantoms behave
Mojang’s “Mob Menagerie: Phantom” article describes phantoms as flying mobs that spawn at night above any player who “hasn’t slept in at least an hour (or three in-game days),” then circle their target before diving down to attack. A phantom summoned with a larger size is still a phantom with that behavior, so the sleep-based spawning does not change because of the size value.

Size limits
The official sources cited here do not state a maximum useful phantom size or a performance limit. Very large values are therefore not documented as safe. If a large phantom causes lag or does not behave as expected, reduce the size value and test again.
